Marshals drop first game to Christian County after 2-0 start

Marshall County pitcher Reese Oakley covers home plate, but Christian County’s Carter Sholar beat the tag to score the Colonels first run in the top of the third in Saturday’s home-opener.

Off to a 2-0 start to open the spring 2022 season under first year head coach Tyler O’Daniel, the Marshals dropped their first game on Saturday to Chrisitan County (5-0). In Monday’s season-opener, they beat Hopkinsville 2-0 and on Thursday topped Trigg County 12-1.

Against Hopkinsville, Evan Oakley earned the win with a complete game shutout. The senior had 15 strike outs, allowed one hit and walked two in his seven innings of work.

The game was scoreless through five innings until the Marshals put two runs on the board in the top of the sixth. The inning began on a walk by Conner Mannon and bunt from Ethan Landis. Mannon advanced to third and scored the Marshals first run on a wild pitch off Tiger’s pitcher Jacob Dilday. Another wild pitch sent Landis to third and he scored on another wild pitch by Landon Cook who replaced Dilday.

The Marshals three hits in the win came from Mannon, Landis and Ty Davenport.

Thursday’s 12-1 win over Trigg County came on 10 hits led by three players with two hits each. Landis went 2-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and three RBIs, Evan Oakley was 2-for-3 with two doubles and Whiteside was 2-for-5. Reese Oakley led in RBIs with four.

The win went to Carter McKinney who went four and a third innings, allowing two hits, one run and struck out five.

Mannon opened the game with a single and he scored on a double by Landis to get things rolling. Landis scored on a Reese Oakley ground out to third base for an early 2-0 lead. The Marshals put four runs on the board in the top of the third on a single by Davenport and two-run single by Reese Oakley who also scored on an error.

Trigg County’s one run came in the bottom of the fifth on a two out bases loaded walk by Isaac Peca that brought Hunter Reynolds across the plate.

Two more runs in the top of the sixth for the Marshals were scored by Evan Oakley and Davenport on a wild pitch by Dallas Ahart for an 8-1 lead.

The final four runs came in the top of the seventh, coming across on a two RBI double by Landis, Mannon scored on a bases loaded pitch that hit Reese Oakley and the 12th run scored on a sacrifice by Hayden.

Saturday in their home-opener, after trailing 2-0 at the end of three innings, the Marshals took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth but a run by Christian County in the top of the sixth tied it at 3-3 which sent the game into extra innings. The Colonels scored two in the top of the ninth in the 5-3 win to start the season undefeated at 5-0.

Davenport led at the plate with two hits that included a double. Hayden had a double and two RBIs with hits also coming off the bats of Mannon and Clayton Wyatt. The Marshals utilized four pitchers with the loss going to Hayden who pitched the final inning, allowing two hits and two runs.

Their three run bottom of the fourth to take a one run lead came on a 2-out 2-RBI double hit by Hayden that brought in Mannon and Davenport and Alex Staples scored on a passed ball.

After the Colonels tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the sixth, their 5-3 win in top of the ninth came on a 2-run homer hit by senior Joshua Snorton.

Elijah Underhill pitched eight innings for the Colonels and racked up 22 strike outs while allowing five hits and three runs.

The Marshals will travel to Lyon County for a game on Monday before hosting Big Orange Madness March 25-26.
