Lady Marshals set to tip off in South Warren Holiday Bash championship game against Owensboro Catholic

Jada Driver, pictured in the Dec. 4 Hoopfest game, tied the Lady Marshals single game record for 3-pointers with nine in their South Warren FirstBank Holiday Bash win over Owensboro.

Three wins in 24 hours in the South Warren FirstBank Holiday Bash has earned the Lady Marshals a spot in the championship game Thursday at 5:30 against Owensboro Catholic (7-4). The 8-0 Lady Marshals opened the tournament Tuesday with a 69-35 win over Oldham County followed by two wins on Wednesday over Owensboro 56-19 and Rockcastle 53-36.

Halle Langhi led with 19 points and 10 rebounds in the win over Oldham County. Freshman Skylar Waller, in her debut with the Lady Marshals, scored 15 points. Waller has been recovering from a shoulder and ankle injury.

After Langhi put the first three points on the board, Waller scored her first points of the season for a 5-0 lead. A 3-pointer from Jada Driver followed by Waller’s second field goal put the Lady Marshals up 10-0. Driver hit her second three to finish out the first quarter on a 23-7 lead.

Waller opened the second quarter on a 3-pointer, the start of an 8-0 run. The Lady Marshals held Oldham County to six second quarter points to amass a 42-13 halftime lead behind 11 points in the half from both Waller and Langhi.

Both teams put up 10 points in the third quarter, eight of Oldham County’s points coming from senior Kayley Butts who led the Lady Colonels with 12. The fourth quarter scoring was spread among seven different players for the Lady Marshals on their way to the 34-point win.

Mia Teague scored a combined 15 points over the first three games of the Holiday Bash for the Lady Marshals.

Game two for girls tipped at 3:00 on Wednesday against Owensboro. After a slow start, the Lady Marshals kicked it in high gear and beat the Lady Devils 56-19.

Down 5-1, Coach Aaron Beth called a timeout with two and a half minutes left in the first quarter and still no field goal for the Lady Marshals. Out of the time out, Langhi scored and they trailed 11-9 at the first quarter buzzer.

Driver ended the first quarter with her first 3-pointer of the game and opened the second quarter with her second of nine total which tied the program record for a single game.

After trailing by two at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Marshals didn’t allow another field goal by Owensboro until the third quarter. Leading 40-13 on Driver’s sixth consecutive three, Chandler Worth broke the scoring drought for the Lady Devils. It would be their only field goal of the quarter and the Lady Marshals lead was 47-15 going into the fourth.

Driver’s final two 3-pointers came in the fourth quarter along with a couple more attempts at the record. Her 30 points led the Lady Marshals in the 56-19 win.

Halle Langhi led the team with 22 points and nine rebounds in the Lady Marshals 53-36 win over Rockcastle and 19 points and 10 rebounds in their tournament opener over Oldham County.

After a couple hours of rest, the Lady Marshals were back on the court to play Rockcastle with the winner advancing to Thursday’s championship game.

A 22-point game from Langhi led the Lady Marshals to a 53-36 win and 5:30 tip off against Owensboro Catholic for the tournament title. Owensboro Catholic advanced through pool play to the championship with wins over Newport Central Catholic 69-39, South Warren 75-44 and Taylor County 67-44.

Ten of Langhi’s 22 points came in the first quarter that fueled their 16-5 lead. They took their largest lead of the half at 26-9 following a three from Neely Northcott and led by 15 at halftime.

A quick 3-pointer by Driver opened the second half and she finished with three in the game after her lights-out shooting from behind the arc in the previous game. Six different players scored in the second half led by Langhi with seven, Driver with six and Mia Teague with five in the 17-point win.
