Six-game win streak ends in loss to Webster County

Lorin Powell led the Lady Marshals in scoring with 10 points against Webster County.

Second year head coach and former Marshall County boy’s basketball assistant, Brandon Fisher, led Webster County to a 48-34 win over the Lady Marshals Tuesday. Last season, Marshall County beat Webster County 41-37 and the Lady Trogans went on to finish the season 21-13, winning the District 6 title and runner-up in Region 2 after losing to Henderson County in the championship game.

The Lady Marshals trailed 13-7 at the end of the first quarter and trailed 19-10 with two minutes remaining in the first half. A foul on Tera Colson and trip to the free throw line cut Webster County’s lead back to six points again but a 3-pointer by Jessica Winders stretched it back out to nine. Colson and Karlie Keeney exchanged baskets for a 24-15 Webster County lead that was cut to six points on a buzzer beating 3-pointer by Cayson Conner.

Free throws by Conner and a basket by Lorin Powell cut the Webster County lead to 24-22 in the third quarter but a 10-0 run by the Lady Trogans gave them a 34-22 lead going into the fourth quarter, holding the Lady Marshals to four third quarter points.

Two points from Kinley Edwards stopped the run in the fourth quarter but with four minutes remaining, the Lady Marshals were still down by 10. Webster County took their largest lead of the game at 38-24, cut to 11 points on a three by Layne Pea which would be the closest they would come the remainder of the game against a strong Lady Trogan team.

Led by Winders with 15 points, Webster County improves to 13-4 with the win. The Lady Marshals fall to 9-4, snapping a six-game win streak, and were led by Powell with 10 points.
