Kentucky Dam spilling about 1.4 million gallons per second Tuesday afternoon

Kentucky Dam is spilling about 1.4 million gallons per second this afternoon as we move water down the river system following heavy rain and storms across the region over the weekend.

Most areas along the Tennessee River will remain below flood stage except at Savannah, TN.

Kentucky Dam helps reduce flood damage on six million acres of the lower Ohio and Mississippi rivers and reduces the frequency of flooding on another 4 million acres.

Called “TVA’s Mightiest Dam” at its Summer 1944 opening with President Harry Truman in attendance, Kentucky Dam is 206 feet high and 8,422 feet long. It is also a hydroelectric plant that has five operating units that can produce approximately 225 megawatts—enough to power about 220,000 homes.
