
Marshall County’s cross country team traveled to Alabama this weekend to complete in Saturday’s 26th Annual Jesse Owens Classic in Oakville.
Kobey Yates finished sixth in the Gold Division among the field of 271 with a time of 15:23.93, breaking his own school record of 15:35.40 set earlier this season at the Central Kentucky Run for the Gold meet in Elizabethtown.
Addison Lyles led the girls’ team with a 35th place finish in the Gold Division in a field 196 runners. Lyles stopped the clock in 19:12.91
John Shoemaker from Oak Mountain High School won the Gold Division in 14:56.39. Paige Comstock of Harrison High School took the win in the girls with a time of 17:36.07.
The meet featured runners competing in twelve divisions ranging from middle school through high school totaling 3,838 from 210 teams across the southeast. The meet took place at Oakville Indian Mounds, just minutes away from the birthplace of Jesse Owens, one of the greatest American Olympic track and field athletes of all time.
The varsity runners will compete next on October 12 in the Nooga at Night in Chattanooga, Tenn. Looking ahead, Marshall County will host the regional meet on Saturday, Oct. 26.
