Marshall County’s Lady Marshals volleyball team has extended their current win streak to six games after Tuesday’s 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-19) district win over Calloway County. Their record improves to 9-3 and 4-0 in the 4th District.
“A lot of it has just been hard work and dedication and they’re buying into this system and believing in themselves”, Head Coach Paige Fletcher said of the win streak. “Being so young they sometimes second quess themselves and it’s very easy to get into their heads, but they’re digging deep, have enough confidence and play with heart.”
The Lady Marshals held a 13-7 lead in the first set but the Lady Lakers tied it up at 13 behind the serves of Cambrey Driscoll. The set was knotted up again at 18 a piece before the Lady Marshals nudged ahead at 21-20 on a kill by Catherine Shelton. They went on to take set one 25-22 on a perfectly placed kill by freshman Bella Redden.

Out to an early 7-3 lead in set two, the Lady Marshals lead vanished when the Lady Lakers tied it up at 13-13 and finished out the 7-0 run to take a 16-13 lead. A kill by Olivia Hawkins ended the run and they went on to take the lead back at 19-18. Kills by Shelton and Redden and a run of serves from Hawkins closed out the 25-19 second set win.
Behind the serves of Emma Reynolds, the Lady Marshals quickly jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the third set. Calloway County answered with successful serves from Taylor Holland to close the Lady Marshals lead to 7-5. Calloway County drew to within one at 12-11 but a combination of kills from Shelton and Redden as well as a great defensive effort propelled the Lady Marshals to a 25-19 third set win to sweep the match 3-0.
Coach Fletcher said despite their current success they are still working on finding a little more consistency as well as playing together. With a young team, Fletcher is happy with the play of her freshman who she says are stepping up when their number is called.
Hawkins led the team in kills with 11 followed by Redden with six and Shelton with five. Hawkins led in digs with 21, Maleah Terry had 17, Hadley Barrett 11 and Reagan Carmichael 10. Reynolds had 25 assists and 10 aces.
The Lady Marshals will look to continue their hot streak and unbeaten record in the district when they play at Murray on Thursday.
