Mountain bike team kicks off 2024 season at the “Throwdown at Etown”

Emma Roberts took third in the girl’s JV race for the Marshall County team in their first race of the season last Saturday in Elizabethtown.

Marshall County’s mountain bike team opened the 2024 season of the Kentucky Interscholastic Cycling League (KICL) last Saturday at the Buffalo Lake Trail in Elizabethtown racing in the “Throwdown at Etown”. This was the first of a five-race series that will culminate in the State Championship on October 27 in Owensboro.

The race was the first ever short course for both middle and high school riders, sending them around the 2.5 mile course for several laps giving fans the opportunity to see more of the racers. Over 220 high school and middle school riders competed from across the state.

The Marshall County team placed six on the podium at the end of racing starting with Brady Atkins who finished second in varsity boys and Emma Roberts with a third place finish in JV girls. Also taking the podium in the high school division was Emily Downs with second place in sophomore girls and Amelia Miller took third in freshman girls.

In middle school results, Hudson Atkins won the seventh grade boys race and Molly Morris placed third in the seventh grade girls race.

Marshall County took second in team standings after Race #1, just 10 points behind first place Hardin-Elizabethtown Composite. Local teams McCracken County finished fifth and Livingston County Composite finished 13th among the 18 teams.

Race #2 will take place on September 15 in Lexington at Veteran’s Park.
