Marshals earn first win 10-8 over Grayson County

Toren Redmond (7) celebrates his pass reception for a touchdown late in the second quarter with teammate Cash Henson (3) in the Marshals 10-8 win over Grayson County at Carroll Traylor Stadium on Friday.

Marshall County survived a late game drive that resulted in a missed field goal by Grayson County to win 10-8 and earn their first win of the 2024 season and first for Head Coach Nick Bloodworth.

Trailing 8-7 in the third quarter, the Marshals took the lead on a 23-yard field goal by Tommy Robertson with 7:48 on the clock and it would prove to be enough for the first win and even their record to 1-1.

“Amazing feeling”, Head Coach Nick Bloodworth said to WCBL’s Aaron Clayton. “Hard fought game…our guys played tough right from the kickoff. To get that first win is a feeling I can’t describe.”

Grayson County struck first, scoring on a 23-yard run by Kolby Chaffins that capped off a 70-yard drive. The Cougars successfully added the two-point conversion for an early 8-0 lead with 19 seconds left in the first quarter.

Jake Thomasson (24) had a 70 yard rushing night for the Marshals in Friday’s win over Grayson County.

The Marshals picked up some nice yards on their next drive on a pass from Neyland Jezik to Toren Redmon and rushing yards from Jake Thomasson but would turn it over on downs to the Cougars.

Forcing a Grayson County punt on their next drive, the Marshals capitalized and found the endzone with 1:19 left in the half. The 70-yard drive was highlighted by a pass completion from Jezik to Kamren Brown, run from Thomasson and capped off with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Jezik to Redmon. Robertson added the point after and the Marshals trailed 8-7 at halftime.

After receiving the second half kickoff, a pass completion from Jezik to Cash Henson to the 25-yard line helped set up Robertson’s field goal that gave the Marshals the lead.

Grayson County had an opportunity to take the lead on their next drive but the 34-yard field goal attempt by Evan Hasty missed to the left.

In the fourth quarter, the Marshals forced a turnover on downs by the Cougars and needed a drive that would run time off the clock. Facing fourth down, a punt from Redmon gave Grayson County the ball near the 20-yard line for their final drive of the night.

With the clock ticking down and no time outs, the Cougars drove to the 15-yard line and with 32 seconds remaining, missed the field goal attempt.

Marshall County will host Murray next Friday. The Tigers are 1-1 following a 42-7 win over Calloway County on Friday.
