Murray State Athletics Release
Trey Wall posted a final round one-under-par 71 Thursday to become the third player from the Murray State golf program to claim the Kentucky State amateur championship.
A redshirt freshman in the 2023-24 season, Wall posted rounds of 71-66-71 for a 208 total, to win the 110th playing of the event as he produced a four-shot win over four competitors who carded totals of 212 at Traditions Golf Club in Hebron, Kentucky.
“I didn’t sleep very well last night,” Wall said of how he handled the day when a state championship was on the line. “I got to the course early, warmed up and made bogey on the first hole, but then made a 20-footer for birdie on the sixth hole. Coming down the stretch, I was thinking about if I win, all the stuff that’s going to happen. Then I told myself ‘hey dude, you have five holes left, so let’s stay in the moment’ and I did.”
Wall joins Chris Wilson of Mayfield, Ky., who was the Racers’ first champion in 1992, and Patrick Newcomb, who won back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012. Wall and Newcomb both hail from Marshall County high school in Benton Kentucky.
After posting a 6-under 66 in round two, featuring a hole-in-one at the par-3 fifth hole, Wall played a consistent final round with much riding on the outcome. He made the turn with a 35, and overcame a couple of bogeys with birdies at the 14th and 16th holes. Wall played the final two holes with par for a 4-shot victory.
“I can’t tell you how proud I am of Trey,” Murray State Head Coach Jacob Miller said. “This past fall, he and I had a conversation about him redshirting and focusing on developing his game while saving a season and that’s exactly what he has done. He has now started his summer by winning his home event, the Calvert City Early Bird and the State Am. That’s the definition of trusting in the process!”
With the State Am win, Wall is an automatic qualifier for the United States Amateur (Aug. 12-18) at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota.
The Racers had five student-athletes in the field this week at Traditions and all of them made the cut, including Sam Guest who placed ninth on scores of 75-68-71=214. Other MSU finishes included Jay Nimmo in 43rd place (71-74-79=224) and Tyler Wirth in 51st place (74-74-78=226). Rocco Zakutney placed 62nd (76-76-77=228).
