Marshals win two, drop one in Preston Cope Classic games

Senior Jace Driver had one hit and picked up the win, allowing one hit, no runs and struck out one in the Marshals 9-6 Preston Cope Classic win over Mt. Vernon and earned Player of the Game honors.

Marshall County Baseball hosted the Preston Cope/David Taylor Dinger Wood Bat Classic over the weekend. The Marshals won two and lost one to improve to 7-12 on the season. Friday the Marshals beat Mt. Vernon, Ill. 9-6. Two games on Saturday began with a 3-1 loss to Harrisburg, Ill. followed by a 6-3 win over Madisonville-North Hopkins.

Jace Driver earned Player of the Game honors in Friday’s win over Mt. Vernon. Driver had one hit and picked up the win from the mound, allowing one hit, no runs, walked one and struck out one. The Marshals combined for eight hits, led by Reese Oakley with a single and a double and Gavin Clark with two singles. Alex Staples had one hit and drove in two runs.

Harrisburg, Ill. beat the Marshals 3-1 on five hits in the first of two games on Saturday. The Marshals also tallied five hits but managed just one run in the bottom of the second on a single by Driver.

Harrisburg’s Noah Arnold pitched the complete game win, allowing the five hits and one run while striking out eight and walking three.

Sophomore pitcher Kannon Dunn picked up the 6-3 win over Madisonville-North Hopkins and earned Player of the Game honors in Saturday’s Preston Cope Classic.

The Marshals wrapped up their games in the Preston Cope Classic with a 6-3 win on five hits over Madisonville-North Hopkins (8-10). Kannon Dunn picked up the win over three innings, allowing two hits, two runs, six strike outs and walked three. Dunn also had one hit and two RBIs to earn Player of the Game honors. Driver hit a double and drove in two runs. Reese Oakley pitched the first four innings, striking out 11 while giving up five hits and one run.
