Marshals wrap regular season with wins over St. Mary, Madisonville-North Hopkins

Leading scorer Alex Staples led the Marshals with 21 points in their final regular season game at Madisonville-North Hopkins.

The Marshals wrapped up their regular season schedule with wins in their final two games. Saturday, they beat St. Mary 63-55 and Tuesday took the win at Madisonville-North Hopkins 67-57. The Marshals are 20-7 and will play next in the 4th District Tournament against Calloway County on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at Murray High. Tipoff at 7:30.

In Saturday’s win over St. Mary, the Marshals were led in scoring by Matthew Langhi with 18 points and Alex Staples with 17. Owen Mikel led St. Mary with 18 points and hit four second half three pointers.

The Marshals stretched their three point first quarter lead out to 10 at halftime. It was a very even second half offensively. The Vikings outscored the Marshals by two in the half but they held on to win by eight.

Cash Henson scored 11 in the Marshals win over St. Mary and four points in the win over Madisonville-North Hopkins.

In Tuesday’s regular season finale’ in Madisonville, Staples led all scorers with 21 points, Logan Parker and Langhi had 11 each and Ryan Stokes finished with 10.

The two teams met early this season in the Hoopfest on December 2 when the Marshals handed the Maroons what would be their worst loss of the season by a final score of 77-43 while also holding them to their lowest point total of the season.

The Marshals led 13-8 at the end of the first quarter after closing it out on two consecutive three pointers by Staples and Kyzer Phillips.

Madisonville’s Lemontae Ratcliff hit back-to-back threes to open the second quarter to pull the Maroons to within one and his eighth straight point gave them a 16-15 lead. Parker scored to put the Marshals back on top but the Maroons finished out the half with a 27-23 lead.

The Marshals outscored the Maroons by four in the third quarter to tie the game up. Staples took over in the final moments of the quarter with a basket, steal that led to a basket and another two points that put them on top 43-40. Kanyon Johnson hit a three for the Maroons to tie it up at 43.

Knotted up again at 50 in the fourth quarter, Staples went to the line and hit two technical foul free throws to put the Marshals back up by two and they never trailed again. An 8-0 run by the Marshals gave them a nine-point lead late in the game. A slam by Parker and free throws from Staples closed out the 67-57 win.
