Marshals hold off Lakers for the district win

MURRAY – The Marshals snapped a three-game losing streak Friday in their 56-48 win over Calloway County, a team they will meet again in the first game of the 4th District Tournament.

D.J. Pigg led the Marshals in the win with 21 points and was a perfect 8 of 8 at the free throw line, scoring seven of the Marshals 11 first quarter points. Dylan Walters rounded out the scoring with four points in the quarter for an 11-9 Marshall lead.

Calloway took their first lead of the game on a three from Jeremy Darnell to open the 2nd quarter followed by a three from Pigg that put the Marshals back up by two. Kamden Price scored to tie the game at 14-14 but a basket by Pigg put the Marshals back on top by two and they would continue to lead until the final buzzer, finishing out the first half with a 31-18 lead.

Price scored first for the Lakers to open the second half of play that was followed by a 7-0 run from the Marshals from Matthew French, Aaron Reed and a three from Pigg for a 38-20 lead. Calloway answered by out-scoring the Marshals 15-5 to close out the 3rd quarter down by eight.

The Lakers would close the Marshals lead to 49-45 with 54 second left to play. Two free throws by Skyler Smith put the Marshals back up by six which was cut in half on a three from Price with 45.1 second left on the clock to make it a one possession game.

Pigg hit two free throws, Walters hit one of two and a steal by Pigg that resulted in a foul with 6.3 seconds to go sent him to the line to complete his perfect night from the stripe and a 56-48 Marshall win.
