Marshals take down Comets 68-36

Tuesday at Reed Conder Gymnasium, Marshall County boys’ basketball hosted Carlisle County. The Marshals picked up their ninth consecutive win over the Comets by a final score of 68-36. Since the 1997 season, the Marshals lead the series against the Comets 26-5.

Twelve different players contributed to the scoring, led by senior Orrin Phelps who had 14 points and scored the first seven Marshall County points of the game. Carlisle County senior Carter Burnett scored nearly half of the Comets points, finishing with 17.

The Marshals led 15-6 at the end of the first quarter fueled by Phelps’ seven points. Carlisle County’s six points came on two 3-pointers from Zack Grogan and Burnett.

Five different players contributed to the second quarter scoring for the Marshals, led by Tommy Robertson with four, and they took a 13-point lead into the locker room at halftime at 27-14.

A basket by Logan Parker in the third quarter gave the Marshals their largest lead of the night to that point at 40-20. Parker scored six of the Marshals final seven points of the third quarter and they took a 47-30 lead into the final frame.

Phelps opened the fourth quarter with four straight free throws, followed by a 3-pointer from Cash Henson which extended the lead to 54-30. The Marshals went on to outscore the Comets 21-6 in the final quarter to earn their fourth win of the season and remain undefeated.

Marshall County will host Graves County on Friday in the Glory Road Heritage Game. The Marshals will honor the Brewers High School Redmen who won the state championship in 1948 while going 36-0. Graves County will represent the Cuba Cubs who won the state championship in 1952.
