Paving of final driving surface to take about a week to complete

PADUCAH, Ky. (July 28, 2023) –  Jim Smith Contracting plans asphalt paving on the approaches to the New U.S. 60 Cumberland River “Smithland” Bridge starting on Monday, July 31, 2023.

Traffic has been traveling on base courses of asphalt since the new bridge opened on May 15.  A paving crew will be working along U.S. 60 between the 12 and 13-mile marker to complete a final driving surface.  The crew will work on each side of the bridge from near the KY 70/Tiline Road intersection in Smithland to the Brummite Road (Ball Park) intersection.

A milling crew will likely work along this section of U.S. 60 this weekend.

Motorists should be alert for one-lane traffic with alternating flow controlled by flaggers.  Appropriate caution is required.

The New U.S. 60 Cumberland River bridge at Smithland, also known as the Jim R. Smith Memorial Bridge and the Smithland Bridge, is at U.S. 60 Livingston County mile point 12.348.  The 1,912 ft bridge with a 700 ft. main span and 40 ft. wide deck opened to traffic on May 15, 2023.  It was constructed by Jim Smith Contracting of Grand Rivers.

About 5,100 vehicles cross the Smithland Bridge in an average day.  The US 60 Cumberland River Bridge at Smithland is at Cumberland River navigation mile point 2.7.

The new bridge replaces a structure that opened to traffic in 1931.  Explosive demolition of the truss on the old bridge is anticipated sometime in late August.
