
Evelyn Campbell, age 93, of Paducah, passed away on Tuesday, November 8, 2022 at the Ray and Kay Eckstein Hospice Care Center at Mercy Health Lourdes.
Evelyn was born in Grahamville, Kentucky on September 19, 1929 to the late Roy T. and Birdie Elinor Hughes Wood. She worked as a computer punch operator for Magnaox, which became, McGraw, and provided childcare to dozens of children in her home for more than 25 years. She was affectionately known as “Cammie” by the children she kept and then by her grandchildren. She loved to travel with her children and grandchildren on family outings to destinations including Florida, Outer Banks, North Carolina, the Grand Canyon, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Las Vegas, Hawaii, and Canada, but her favorite destination was the beach.
Evelyn was a graduate of Heath High School. She was a member of the Paducah Athletic Club, where she did aquafit well into her late 80s and was an avid walker. She was a lifetime member of Harmony Baptist Church where she served as church secretary and clerk, Sunday School teacher, Women’s Missionary Union member, Vacation Bible School teacher, and choir member and also visited, the sick in hospitals and nursing homes. She loved her family, family gatherings and her church.
Evelyn is survived by her three daughters, Gail McAlister (Larry) of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Sharon Heming (Peter) of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Donna Hickey (Larry) of Paducah, Kentucky; one son, Jeffrey Campbell (Barbara) of St. Johns, Florida; seven grandchildren, Abby McAlister Willems (Daniel) of Carrboro, North Carolina, Graham McAlister (Hannah) of San Francisco, California, Matthew Campbell of St. Johns, Florida, Andrew Campbell (Lauren) of Urbana, Illinois, Tyler Heming (Jara) of Leeds, United Kingdom, Erin Heming (Kaitlin) of Tempe, Arizona and Katie Heming-Chapman (Jonathan) of Guelph, Ontario Canada; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Larue Campbell; four sisters, Frances Turner, Hazel L. Long, Rebecca Wood and Kathryn Griffin; four brothers, Harvey Wood, William “Dink” Wood, Fred Wood and Roy Wood, Jr.
Funeral services for Evelyn will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, November 12, 2022 at Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Paducah with Rev. Andy Shelton officiating. Burial will follow in Harmony Cemetery in Grahamville.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 am until the service time of 1:00 pm on Saturday, November 12, 2022 at the funeral home.
