Marshall County tennis teams building momentum for Regionals

J.C. Wells has won four of her last five singles matches and, alongside partner Laken Schroader, four of her last five doubles matches.

Marshall County’s tennis team is gearing up for the postseason, with the Regional Tournament set to begin May 12 at the Larry Heflin Tennis Courts in Lone Oak.

Before Spring Break, the team played two matches, securing a dominant win over Ballard Memorial and falling to Calloway County.

Against Ballard, both the boys’ and girls’ teams swept their matches. The girls secured a 7-0 victory, while the boys posted a 9-0 shutout.

Elston Evans has earned wins in four of his last six singles matches and three wins in doubles with playing partner Maverick Simmons.

In their match against Calloway County, Wells picked up an 8-1 singles win and teamed with Schroader for an 8-6 doubles victory. On the boys’ side, Colburn won his singles match 8-6, and the doubles team of Evans and Simmons earned an 8-5 win.

Following Spring Break, the Marshals faced a tough opponent in McCracken County. The girls fell 7-0, and the boys lost 7-1. The lone win came from Colburn, who defeated Campbell 8-4.

The boys rebounded with a strong performance against Madisonville-North Hopkins, notching a 7-2 win.

Simmons played a good singles match falling 8-5. In doubles, Evans/Simmons won 8-6 and Hall/Hill pulled out a 9-8 (7-1) tiebreaker win. Rudd/Colburn dropped their match 8-3.

Earlier this week, the girls dropped a 6-3 decision to Murray, while the boys eked out a 5-4 win.

On Thursday, the boys earned another hard-fought 5-4 win against Ballard with all four losses coming by narrow margins.

Taylor Thomas has picked up a couple of singles wins in recent matches against Ballard Memorial, 8-4 and 6-2.

The girls had a strong showing, topping Ballard 6-1.
