He was a member of Spence Chapel United Methodist Church and the retired owner / operator of Mathis Orchard. He was also a former administrator of Mayfield-Graves County Vocational Center, a former vocational-agriculture teacher at Symsonia High School and he taught advanced adult classes for area farmers. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Mr. Mathis is survived by two sons, Chris (Kim) Mathis of Mayfield, KY and Craig Mathis of Eddyville, KY; two sisters, Sylva Mathis, McGukin of Cullman, AL and Sherry Mathis Dyke of Mayfield, KY; four grandchildren, Tiffany (Josh) Manning, Chelsey Mathis, Chase (Kristin) Mathis and Jarrod Mathis; eight great grandchildren; and multiple nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Jimmy Joe Mathis and his parents, Coleman “C.B.” Bedwell Mathis and Mary Laurine Beaman Mathis.
Funeral services for Mr. Walter Coleman Mathis will be 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 23, 2025 at Byrn Funeral Home in Mayfield, KY. Rev. Keith Allred and Rev. Ben Stratton will officiate. Interment will follow at Spence Chapel Cemetery.
Military graveside rites will be conducted by American Legion Post #26.
Pallbearers will be Chase Mathis, Josh Manning, Joey Clark, Jarrod Mathis, Coleman Lucas Mathis and Skylar Lee Clark. Honorary pallbearers will be Isla Ann Manning, Evie Faith Manning, Lovett Lou Mathis, Presley William Jarrell and Murphy James Jarrell.
Visitation will be 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, 2025 at the funeral home.
