Marshals split early week games – fall to Caldwell, shutout Ballard

Kaden Merrick earned win in the shut out over Ballard Memorial on Tuesday, allowing no hits while striking out four over three innings.

Marshall County’s baseball team was back in action after a break from competition over Spring Break. Monday they faced Caldwell County (10-2) and lost 8-1 but followed the loss up with a 15-0 shutout over Ballard Memorial (1-8) on Tuesday, improving their season record to 8-3.

The Marshals out hit Caldwell County 9-6 but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Tigers. Houston Doughty got things started early, scoring the game’s first run on a passed ball after reaching on a single. However, the 1-0 lead quickly vanished.

Caldwell County responded with a six-run bottom half of the inning, starting with an RBI double by Ari Wells to tie the game. Westin King followed with a go-ahead RBI single. The Tigers plated four more runs on a passed ball, a sacrifice fly, an error, and a steal of home to take a 6-1 lead.

Caldwell County added a run in each of the second and fifth innings for the 8-1 victory.

Doughty led the Marshals at the plate, going 2-for-4. Ayden Clevidence and Kannon Dunn each added a double.

Kannon Dunn hit a home run in each of his two plate appearances and finished with four RBIs in the Marshals 15-0 win over Ballard Memorial.

Tuesday, the Marshals shut out Ballard Memorial 15-0 on nine hits in three innings with Kaden Merrick giving up no hits while striking out four.

Kannon Dunn led the offensive fire power with home runs in both the first and third innings, finishing with four RBIs. Matthew Henderson had a perfect day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Houston Doughty added to the effort, going 2-for-2 with a double and driving in two runs.

Dunn’s first inning homer scored two runs and Henderson came across the plate on a wild pitch for the early 3-0 lead. A double by Doughty scored the fourth run in the bottom of the second and Henderson hit a double to drive in two more for the 6-0 lead.

Their nine run third inning began with the bases loaded up on walks. Three runs came across the plate on errors for a 9-0 lead. Doughty hit an RBI single, and Dunn hit his second homer of the night that brought in two more.

Maddox Cope drew a walk with the bases loaded to put the Marshals up 13-0 and their final two runs came across on an RBI single by Talan Rose and Ayden Clevidence took advantage of a wild pitch.

Up next, the Marshals will face Graves County (7-5) on Thursday in Mayfield at 5:30.
