Flash flooding, strong winds and possible tornadoes expected across the region tonight into Saturday
PADUCAH, Ky. (Apr. 2, 2025) – With severe weather and up to 15 inches of rain forecast over the next four days, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 1 crews have been preparing and monitoring weather conditions closely.
The National Weather Service in Paducah has issued a Level 5 High Risk for flooding and severe weather, including possible tornadoes, for much of Western Kentucky starting tonight between approximately 6 to 9 p.m. and extending through Saturday.
Even in advance of this storm, in preparation for spring severe weather in general, crews have been removing debris from under bridges and checking culverts and drainage structures to allow for better flow of water during heavy rain events.
Over the last two days, crews have also addressed potholes and gathered all signs and barricades to be ready to respond and close flooded roadways. Crews have also double-checked chainsaws and other equipment needed to remove trees and limbs which could fall into the roadway during storms.
Motorists should avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather events and use extreme caution if travel is necessary.
With the amount of rainfall that is being predicted, many roadways across District 1 will likely be impacted by high water. There may be flooding in areas that normally don’t flood.
Remember, never drive through a flooded roadway — turn around, don’t drown. Even a small amount of running water can push your vehicle off the roadway.
Never move or drive around cones or barricades. They are placed there to keep you safe — flooded or damaged roads may not be visible until it’s too late.
When the water recedes and roads are deemed safe, “Road Closed” signs will be removed.
