Tommy Robertson signed on Wednesday to continue his soccer career at Centre College in Danville, Ky. A senior standout for the Marshals, Tommy will join a strong Centre team playing in the NCAA Division III Southern Athletic Association (SAA).
Centre advanced to the SAA Tournament semifinals in the 2024 season and ended their run with a narrow 1-0 loss to Rhodes College. Centre finished the season with an 11-4-3 overall record and 2-2-2 in conference play.
Tommy has been a four-year contributor to the Marshall County varsity team, beginning his freshman season in 2021. While Tommy’s role that season was limited – playing in 11 games and scoring two goals – it was evident he would become a key player for the program.
In the 2022 season, Tommy established himself as an integral part of the team, playing in all 20 games. Initially starting as a center midfielder, he transitioned to right back following a teammate’s injury. The adjustment also came with a switch to a three-man defensive line, a formation he had never played before. Tommy quickly adapted to his new role, excelling as the season progressed. Although the position shift limited his scoring opportunities, he still contributed three assists on the season.
The 2023 season brought another position change as Tommy moved to center back – again stepping into a role he had never played. He embraced the challenge, becoming a defensive anchor for the team while contributing offensively. Tommy played in all 24 games, scoring seven goals and recording a team-high 11 assists.
That season ended in a heartbreaking Region Championship shootout loss, during which Tommy suffered a broken nose just before halftime. Demonstrating his toughness and dedication, he insisted, “I’m good to go back in”, and played the entire second half and overtime.
As a senior captain in 2024, Tommy led the team with 14 goals and one assist while starting all 26 games. His leadership was evident both on and off the field – setting the standard in training, finishing first in team runs, and giving maximum effort every day. Tommy’s relentless work ethic, toughness and willingness to learn made him an invaluable player. He embraced challenges, asked thoughtful questions, and always prioritized the team’s success over personal accolades. Whether holding the defensive line or pushing forward in attack, Tommy’s impact was undeniable.
Tommy’s outstanding high school career earned him numerous accolades including:
• All-District Team (2023, 2024)
• All-Region Second Team (2023)
• All-Region First Team (2024)
• All-Region Defensive Player of the Year (2024)
• Marshall County Team Defensive Player of the Year (2024)
• Marshall County Team Player of the Year (2024)
In addition to his success on the soccer field, Tommy excels academically. He is the President of the National Honor Society, placed first at FBLA Regionals in 2024 and 2025 and ranks in the top 10 of his graduating class.
“Tommy has been an exceptional player and leader for Marshall County and we have no double he will make a significant impact at Centre College”, Head Coach Bryan Smothers said. “We wish him the best of luck in this exciting new chapter and look forward to cheering him on next fall in Danville.”
Tommy was joined at his signing by members of his family, soccer and basketball team coaches, soccer and basketball teammates and friends.
