Marshals hold off Mt. Vernon 53-42

Ryan Stokes scored a season high 10 points in the Marshals win over Mt. Vernon on Tuesday.

In their final home game of the regular season, Marshall County hosted the Rams of Mt. Vernon, IL on Saturday in a 6:00 game. The Marshals won 53-42 and improve to 26-1 while Mt. Vernon drops to 16-9.

After trailing throughout most of the first quarter, the Marshals were dominant in the next two holding the Rams to a combined five points. The fourth quarter was ruled by the Rams who trimmed a once 24-point deficit down to seven points before the Marshals held on for the 11-point win.

Tommy Robertson scored the first five points of the game for Marshall County and they trailed 7-5. Neyland Jezik hit his first of three 3-pointers in the game to give them their first lead at 10-9 and they ended the quarter up by one point on Robertson’s second three.

Over three minutes of the second quarter elapsed before any points were scored. The Marshals striking first on a basket by Ryan Stokes and they held Mt. Vernon to just one field goal. A basket that just beat the buzzer by Robertson sent them to the halftime locker room up 23-14.

The third quarter mirrored the second with the Marshals defense once again holding Mt. Vernon to one field goal plus a free throw. Eight points by Matthew Langhi and seven from Stokes fueled the Marshals offensive effort and 24-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Not ready to throw in the towel, Mt. Vernon opened the quarter on a 7-0 run and went on to slash the Marshals lead down to seven at 45-38. Robertson scored seven of the final eight points for the Marshals to hold off Mt. Vernon 53-42.

Robertson led the Marshals with 19 points. At the free throw line they were 12-of-18 and hit five 3-pointers. Cale Maurer led Mt. Vernon with 21 points.

Weather permitting, the Marshals are scheduled to play their final regular season game on Thursday at Caldwell County.
