Heavy Rain Across District 1 Could Lead to Flash Flooding Event

Remember, turn around, don’t drown

PADUCAH, Ky. (Feb. 14, 2025)  The National Weather Service (NWS) is anticipating much of Western Kentucky will see moderate to heavy rainfall this weekend, ranging from 2 to 6 inches across District 1. A Flash Flood Watch has been issued.

There is also a small risk for severe thunderstorms Saturday afternoon and evening. NWS Paducah says concern is growing for a potentially significant or major flash flooding event in the Flood Watch area, which includes all twelve District 1 counties, from Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 1 team is monitoring the forecast closely.

Heavy rain can reduce visibility and present a danger of hydroplaning while driving. Hydroplaning can occur at any speed under the right combination of conditions. Hydroplaning occurs when the tires drive over wet pavement or standing water and lose contact with the road surface. This results in a loss of traction and an inability to steer the vehicle.

Motorists should reduce speed, avoid distractions, allow additional time to reach your destination, and leave ample space between vehicles.

Motorists should plan to use alternate routes and avoid driving through low areas that are prone to flooding. Road conditions can change rapidly during a heavy rain event. Even roads that typically don’t flood might have standing or flowing water.

When necessary, KYTC maintenance crews will place signage on roads that have high water and flooding. If water has covered the center line, the road will be blocked around the flooded section. When the water recedes and roads are deemed safe, “Road Closed” signs will be removed. Motorists should not move or drive around barricades or cones that have been put in place.

Do not assume just because there isn’t a sign or barricade there will be no high water. Be alert and never attempt to drive through standing or flowing water. As little as 6 inches of flowing water can push a vehicle off the road. Remember, turn around, don’t around.

Road closures due to flooding will be updated on the KYTC District 1 Facebook page.
