Marshals top Mayfield 68-43, improve to 25-1

Marshall County hosted Mayfield on Tuesday in the first of their final three games of the regular season schedule and they improved to 25-1 with their 68-43 win over the Cardinals.

Saturday will be the final regular season home game against Mt. Vernon at 6:00 and they will wrap it up before post season play on Tuesday at Caldwell County.

Alex Staples scored the first two baskets for the Marshals but they were sandwiched between a couple of 3-pointers by Mayfield’s Owen Byrd. Tied 6-6 on a basket by Tommy Robertson, Isaac Power put Mayfield up by two but it proved to be the last lead the Cardinals would have the rest of the night.

A steal and lay in by Robertson, 3-pointer from Kaden Mohler and Matthew Langhi free throws gave the Marshals a 15-13 lead to end the first quarter.

The Marshals offense kicked into high gear in the second quarter, outscoring Mayfield 23-11 to take a 14-point lead at halftime. Scoring came from five different players led by Kyzer Phillips with eight points.

Langhi scored 17 of his team-leading 21 points in the second half. Twelve coming in the third quarter to push the Marshals lead to 20 before finishing out the quarter on a 54-37 lead.

The Marshals held Mayfield to six fourth quarter points on their way to the 25-point win and 25th win of the season.

Phillips led the Marshals from behind the arc hitting two of the teams five 3-pointers. They were 15-of-17 at the free throw line, led by Langhi who hit 6-of-7.
