Lady Marshals fall 44-42 to the Lady Eagles

Marshall County and Graves County tipped off in their second regular season game on Friday at the Eagles Nest. After falling to the Lady Eagles at home on January 17 by a final score of 42-26, the Lady Marshals were looking to even things up and extend their current five-game win streak.

After trailing early, the Lady Marshals grabbed the lead to start the second quarter, one they would maintain until the closing seconds of the game. Graves County tied the game up at 42-42 with 28.2 seconds to go but a loose ball recovered by the Lady Eagles led to a basket and a two point lead.

One final shot before the buzzer by the Lady Marshals was off the mark and they fell to the Lady Eagles 44-42.

The 3-point shot was on target for the Lady Marshals with all 15 of their first quarter points coming from beyond the arc, two each from Skylar Waller and Kinzlee Terry and one from Rylee Teague. Graves County’s leading scorer Hannah Glisson put up 11 of their first quarter points and they led 17-15.

A 6-0 run by the Lady Marshals to start the second quarter put them up by four but two ties would follow before back-to-back basket from Jessica Reed and Teague sent them to the halftime locker leading 28-23.

A Waller 3-pointer set the tone for the third quarter and they pushed the lead to 37-30 on another three from Teague. The Lady Marshals came up with a turnover and a pass into the hands of Terry for the basket ended the third quarter up 39-31. The defensive effort in the quarter held Glisson to two free throws.

They took their largest lead of the night by nine points to start the final quarter but Graves County answered with a 7-0 run on baskets from Ella Kemp, Sydney Shae and Kailee Winfrey.

The Lady Eagles run ended on a free throw by Eden Sandlin who proceeded to come up with a steal and basket. A free throw by Terry followed and gave the Lady Marshals a four-point cushion at 42-38 with 1:55 remaining in the game.

Kemp scored to draw the Lady Eagles to within two and they stepped up their defensive effort forcing half-court tie ups that resulted with possession and 35.2 left on the clock. Glisson was fouled and hit both free throws that tied the game up at 42.

Ginger Martin’s basket that followed the scramble for the loose ball put the Lady Eagles up by two in the closing seconds to give them the regular season sweep over the Lady Marshals.

Waller and Terry scored 11 points each to lead the Lady Marshals. The team was 4-of-8 at the free throw line and hit nine 3-pointers, Waller and Teague leading the way with three each.

Glisson led the Lady Eagles with 17. They hit 10-of-12 at the line and had five 3-pointers.
