Lady Marshals earn season sweep over Lady Mustangs

Over the last three seasons, the Lady Marshals have lost nine straight to McCracken County, but that streak came to an end this year after they earned a regular season sweep over the Lady Mustangs with Saturday’s 55-44 win.

Skylar Waller led the Lady Marshals to victory with a team-high 22 points, scoring 20 of those in the second half. She was key from beyond the arc, hitting four of the team’s seven 3-pointers, and was perfect from the free-throw line. Reagan Hill led the Lady Mustangs with 22 points.

Addi Wall scored the first basket of the game followed by a 3-pointer from Rylee Teague for the early 5-0 lead. Kinzlee Terry scored following a McCracken County turnover to make it a 7-2 game before the Lady Mustangs cut the lead down to one.

Teague’s second three of the quarter and baskets from Waller and Terry finished out the quarter on a 14-6 lead.

Jessica Reed’s five points to start the second quarter helped extend the Lady Marshals’ lead to 13, and they finished out the half up 23-12 on a basket by Wall off an assist from Terry.

McCracken County made a strong push in the third quarter with back-to-back 3-pointers from Ashley Word and Hill, but Waller answered with a three and a field goal to keep the Lady Marshals in control.

The Lady Marshals 10 point lead to start the fourth quarter grew to 16 at 47-31 after Waller dropped in her fourth 3-pointer of the game. She went on to score 12 of their 19 points in the final frame.

McCracken County narrowed the gap to seven points with 50.5 seconds left, but Waller sealed the 11-point win by making two free throws, followed by a final basket from Terry off an assist from Waller.

Seven 3-pointers in the game for the Lady Marshals came from Waller with four, Teague had two and Reed hit one. They were 10-of-16 at the free throw line, led by Waller and Terry each hitting 4-of-4. Two 3-pointers by McCracken County were made by Ashley Word and they were 12-of-19 at the line.

The Lady Marshals improve to 16-5 and will look to win their fifth straight game on Monday when they host Hopkins County Central (11-8). It will be their third time to play the Lady Storm this season after taking wins in the first two meetings.
