Lady Marshals advance to Rafferty’s Double Dogs Caveland Classic championship game

Freshman Jessica Reed scored a career-high 19 points to help lead the Lady Marshals to the championship game after their 65-47 win over Hopkins County Central in the Rafferty’s Double Dogs Caveland Classic at Edmonson County.

The Lady Marshals are in Edmonson County, Ky. playing in the Rafferty’s Double Dogs Caveland Classic and with two wins over Todd County Central 66-24 on Thursday and Friday’s semi-final 65-47 win over Hopkins County Central, they are headed to the championship game. They will meet host Edmonson County on Saturday at 2:00.

Thursday, Dec. 26 vs. Todd County Central

A blazing start by the Lady Marshals put Todd County Central on their heels and they never recovered.  Eden Sandlin’s 17-point game led three players in double figures on their way to the 66-24 win.

The Lady Marshals fast and furious start to the game gave them a 30-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. Skylar Waller hit three straight three-pointers to give them a 16-2 lead and Sandlin went on a scoring frenzy with 10 straight before a buzzer beating layup by Kenzlee Terry.

Marshall County out-scored Todd County Central 18-7 in the second quarter with scoring from seven different players to push the lead out to 48-12 at halftime.

The second half ticked along at a quick pace with the running clock in place. The Lady Marshals outscored the Lady Rebels 18-12 to finish out the 42-point win and advance to Friday’s semi-finals.

Eleven threes in the game made up half of the Lady Marshals points.

Friday, Dec. 27 vs. Hopkins County Central

Freshman Jessica Reed scored a career high 19 points to lead the Lady Marshals in scoring in their 65-47 semi-final win over Hopkins County Central.

An early 11-5 lead by the Lady Marshals following a three-pointer by Skylar Waller and two threes from Kenzlee Terry was wiped out by Hopkins County Central who tied it up at 11 to end the first quarter.

Two straight threes from Waller and one by Rylee Teague to open the second quarter pushed the Lady Marshals lead to 20-12 but the Lady Storm cut it to one at 23-22 following an 8-0 run. Eden Sandlin dropped in a three before the buzzer for a 26-22 halftime lead.

Reed scored the first seven points of the second half to extend the lead to 33-24 and went on to put up 11 of their 14 third quarter points. After scoring to give the Lady Marshals their largest lead of 11 points, Addi Wall then picked up her fourth foul. At this point in the game, the Lady Storm held a 17-2 advantage on trips to the line.

Two more Hopkins County Central free throws from Tyah White finished out an 8-0 run by the Lady Storm to trim the Lady Marshals lead to 39-36. A free throw by Waller ended the third quarter on a four-point advantage.

Reed hit a three to push the score out to 43-36 to open the fourth quarter, the start of 25 points for the Lady Marshals in the final eight minutes. Waller dropped in her fourth and fifth three-point baskets on her way to nine points and 19 for the game in the 65-47 win.
