Alex Staples led the Marshals with 13 points and five assists in Thursday’s 56-21 Hoopfest win over Massac County.

Marshall County and Massac County tipped off in the final game of Thursday’s session of the Marshall County Hoopfest at Reed Conder Gymnasium. The Marshals took the lead from the opening tip and took command of the game, beating the Patriots 56-21 in their first of two Hoopfest games.

The Marshals were led in scoring by a trio of seniors. Alex Staples had 13 points, Kyzer Phillips 11 and Tommy Robertson finished with 10.

Seven different players scored in a dominant first quarter for the Marshals led by Phillips with eight. They held the Patriots to just one point on a free throw by Jude Harmon that ended a 15-0 run to open the game by the Marshals. Harmon hit two more at the line to close out the quarter trailing 25-3.

Kyzer Phillips was selected Game MVP for his performance in the Marshals win over Massac County. Phillips had 11 points and four rebounds.

Jake Turner and Harmon scored the first four points of the second quarter to give the Patriots some life but it would be their only points. The Marshals went on a 15-0 run fueled by seven points from Staples to take a 40-7 lead at halftime.

It was quick second half with the running clock in place giving the Marshals plenty of opportunities to get all players in the game on their way to the 56-21 victory.

They will tip off against Battle Ground Academy from Franklin, Tenn. in the final game of the 2024 Hoopfest on Saturday at 9:30.

In two games earlier on Thursday, Madisonville-North Hopkins beat Evangel Christian 39-38 and Whitehaven, Tenn. beat Fairdale 63-55 in overtime.
