Marshall County’s Marshals opened the 2024-2025 basketball season with a 65-30 win in Hopkinsville over Christian County. The defending First Region champions are expected to make another run at the title after the 11-year drought ended last season and they are the preseason #1 ranked team in the region in several polls.
A familiar face from the First Region, former Murray High head coach Dior Curtis, takes over the reins of the Christian County Colonels program this season.
Christian County scored off the opening tip and it would be their only lead of the night. Senior Tommy Robertson tied it up 2-2 for the Marshals and they were off and running, taking a 15-5 lead to end the first quarter.
The Marshals extended their lead to 25 points at halftime. They were led in the quarter by Robertson with nine points to bring his first half total to 14. Senior Kyzer Phillips scored seven in the quarter to reach double digits with 10 for the half.
Marshall County extended their lead to 33 points after three quarters to go up 57-24, led in scoring by senior Alex Staples with eight points. They added six more in the fourth quarter in the 65-30 win.
The Marshals made three 3-pointers in the game. Robertson with two and Phillips had one. They were 8-of-12 at the free throw line.
Up next, they will meet Massac County on Thursday at 8:00 in the Marshall County Hoopfest.
