Marshall County’s Lady Marshals golf team won their eighth straight Region 1 title on Tuesday at the regional tournament held at Drake Creek Golf Club in Ledbetter.
“It’s a legacy that’s exciting to be a part of and I know our kids are”, Head Coach Valerie Waller said on the achievement. “Now we move on to sub state. One day at a time…it’s what you practice every day for.”
The sub-state first round will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at Hopkinsville Country Club.
“We’ve been just stressing as much as anything about being prepared”, Waller said. “I felt like our kids were really prepared today. We’ve had a couple of practice rounds here. Played in a tournament here regular season and same thing at Hopkinsville. We played in a regular season tournament there and will play a practice round there on Thursday as well and just try and prepare our kids as much as anything so they can be confident and loose come tournament time.”
The Lady Marshals claimed the title with a team score of 317, winning by 35 strokes over runner-up McCracken County.
Madison Glisson of Ballard Memorial won the individual Region 1 title with 3-over par 75. Glisson led Marshall County’s Katie Roberts by one stroke after nine holes, Glisson with a 2-under 34 on the front nine and Roberts at 1-under 35. Glisson went on to shoot two strokes better on the back nine to win while Roberts finished tied for third.
Marshall County’s CeCelia Ray finished her day with a 5-over 77 (39-38) to claim runner-up. Rounding out the Lady Marshals scoring – Skylar Waller 79, Kelli Roberts 83 and Brooklyn Cunningham 91.
Marshall County and McCracken County teams will advance to the first sub-state round along with 10 individuals. McCracken County scoring: Sophie Hollowell 78, Harper Hunt 78, Ella Shelbourne 93, Claire Felker 103.
