Marshall County hosted district opponent Mayfield in their first home game of the season. For the first time in 20 years, Mayfield came away with the win, beating the Marshals 4-3 in overtime. For the Cardinals, it’s their best start in a while after shutting out Graves County in their season opener to go 2-0 in the district.
The Marshals led 2-0 at halftime on an early goal from senior Tommy Robertson and the second goal by senior Isaac Reynolds with six minutes on the clock. Sophomore Owen Staley made it a 3-0 game early in the second half and from there, it was all Mayfield scoring three goals to tie it up and send the district contest into overtime.
In the five-minute overtime period, a handball on Marshall County gave Mayfield’s Pablo Sanchez the opportunity to win the game and he found the back of the net.
Up next, the Marshals will host Caldwell County on Saturday at 7:00.
