Speeding Catches Up With You

MAYFIELD, Ky. (July 20, 2024) – Kentucky State Police Post 1 is participating in The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Speed Prevention Program. This national initiative began on July 8, 2024, and lasts until July 31, 2024. KSP troopers will target areas known for excessive speeds as part of this effort. They are urging drivers to slow down because Speeding Catches Up With You.

Speeding is a dangerous and aggressive behavior that accounts for more than one-quarter of all traffic-related fatalities nationally. No matter how safe a driver someone thinks they may be, speeding is dangerous. Speed limits aren’t a suggestion; they are the law. Obeying posted speed limits keeps drivers, passengers, and others using the road safe.

There are many reasons drivers choose to speed, but lateness, traffic, and a general disregard for others are the main culprits behind this risky behavior. Much like impaired driving, speeding is a selfish choice that can have fatal consequences.

“Our Troopers continually focus their efforts on collision reduction, using traffic and collision data to assist them. This campaign provides an extra emphasis on the hazardous moving violation of speed in the hopes of saving lives. The overall goal is that all Kentuckians and visitors alike make it home safely to their families,” said KSP Post 1 Commander, Captain David Archer.

NHTSA is providing these fast facts about speeding as part of their Speed Prevention campaign:

· Young drivers are especially susceptible to high speeds. They represent the largest demographic involved in speeding-related crashes.

· 35 percent of all motorcyclists involved in fatal crashes in 2022 were speeding.

· 87 percent of all speeding-related traffic fatalities on American roads in 2022 occurred on non-interstate roadways.

In concordance with NHTSA’s Speed Prevention campaign, if you see a driver speeding, do not hesitate to contact your local KSP Post or law enforcement agency.
