Alternate route offered to help avoid/reduce delays
PADUCAH, Ky. (June 30, 2024) – A work zone lane restriction on Interstate 24 at the 29 mile marker on the Tennessee River Bridge in Kentucky has experienced substantial delays due to heavy July 4th Holiday and vacation traffic this weekend.
With traffic restricted to one lane, motorists have been using U.S. 62 between Exit 40 at Eddyville and Exit 27 at Calvert City as an alternate route. However, the volume of traffic this weekend has also caused substantial delays along U.S. 62.
While two lanes of travel will be open in this work zone by Tuesday afternoon, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 1 is offering an additional alternate route to help motorists reduce and avoid delays during peak travel periods.
I-24 EASTBOUND Alternate from Paducah to Nashville
At I-24 Exit 25 take Interstate 69 Southbound to Draffenville U.S.68 Exit 47, then follow U.S. 68 Eastbound to the KY 80 intersection at Aurora, then turn left to continue following U.S. 68 Eastbound through Land Between The Lakes and to the I-24 Cadiz Exit 65 interchange to return to I-24 westbound.
I-24 WESTBOUND Alternate from Nashville to Paducah
At the I-24 Cadiz Exit 65 interchange take U.S. 68 Westbound through Land Between The Lakes, then turn right at Aurora to continue on U.S. 68 West to the Draffenville Exit 47 interchange, then take I-69 North to rejoin I-24 Westbound.
I-24 Tennessee River Bridge at 29mm starting Tuesday, July 2
Starting Tuesday, July 2, his work zone will have two 11-ft lane lanes open for the July 4th Holiday driving period. Starting Tuesday morning, July 9, one-lane traffic will resume for both directions of travel in this work zone.
The work zone on I-24 for bridge painting and major rehab work on the Tennessee River Bridge has an 8 ft.-6 in. max load width and 13 ft- 6 in. max height restriction, a 55 MPH speed limit, enhanced enforcement, double fines, and a concrete barrier wall. Watch for updates.
Starting July 9, the contractor will add an overhead tarp containment structure to allow cleaning and painting of the steel arch. Additional work continues under the bridge deck.
Spartan Contracting is the prime contractor on this $16,353,000 bridge rehabilitation and maintenance project. The target completion date for all work is December 1, 2024.
