Marshall County has won the last five straight 4th District championships all against Calloway County, but Tuesday in extra innings, the Lakers earned their first title since the 2017 season.
After a scoreless regulation seven innings, the game was extended to the eighth when the Lakers made their move, scoring two runs in the top of the inning.
Cole Lockhart led off with a double and Conner Lockhart was intentionally walked. Reese Oakley relieved starter Thomas Bagby on the mound. Cuyler McDaniel loaded the bases after he was hit by a pitch and the two runs scored on errors after Jacob Akin hit a ground ball and reached on an error.
Hits by Alex Staples and Gavin Clark put the tying runs on base in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, a ground ball hit by Jace Driver scored Staples on a fielder’s choice out on Clark at second. Ty Swoope reached on an error by shortstop Conner Lockhart but left stranded with the final out of the game.
Throughout the first seven innings, both teams left six base runners stranded in the title game battle. The Marshals out hit the Lakers 6-4 led by Staples and Clark with two each.
Thomas Bagby allowed just four hits over seven innings on the mound, striking out five, walking four and giving up two runs. The win went to Calloway County’s Nick Cantrell who went all eight innings, striking out two, giving up six hits and one run.
The Region 1 tournament gets underway on Monday at McCracken County.
