Lady Marshals off to 5-1 start after week one of the season

The Lady Marshals softball team wrapped up a very busy opening week of the 2024 season and are off to a 5-1 start. After their season opener loss to Paducah Tilghman, they notched five straight wins over Graves County, Hickman County, Webster County, Johnston City, Ill. and Mater Dei, Ill.

In the five wins combined, the Lady Marshals outscored their opponents 29-7.

Thursday at Hickman County, the Lady Marshals earned a 10-0 shutout in six innings on 13 hits. Leading at the plate was junior Merriel Jackson with three hits and an RBI, junior Allicen Harris with two hits, sophomore Macy McLeod with two hits, senior Madyson Morton with a double and two RBIs and sophomore Trinlee Anderson with a hit a two RBIs.

Harris earned the win over the six innings, pitching five strike outs and allowing just one hit.

Friday at Webster County, the Lady Marshals combined for another 13 hits in their 6-1 win. The Lady Trojans held a 1-0 lead through four innings before a 4-run top of the fifth grabbed the momentum for the Lady Marshals.

Senior Chloe Coursey went 3-for-4 at the plate with a triple and RBI, senior Chevelle Henson had two hits including a double and batted a run in and Merriel Jackson had two hits including a double.

Senior Gracelyn Darnall pitched the first three innings, allowing five hits and giving up a run. Allicen Harris finished off the last four innings, not giving up a hit while striking out six.

Two games on Saturday in Illinois began with a 6-2 win over Johnston City. Trailing 2-1 through four innings, the Lady Marshals tied the game up on a bases loaded walk drawn by Merriel Jackson in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Allicen Harris stepped to the plate and hit a grand slam to seal the win.

Harris also earned the win from the circle, striking out eight while giving up two runs and four hits.

The Lady Marshals picked up their second win of the day on Saturday 3-1 over Mater Dei. A 3-run bottom of the third would hold up for the win.

Marin Oakley singled and Chloe Coursey was hit by a pitch to put two base runners on. With two outs, Allicen Harris drew a walk and with the bases loaded, runs scored when Chevelle Henson reached on an error, Gracelyn Darnall singled to bring the second run across and Trinlee Anderson drew a bases loaded walk that brought in Harris.

Darnall struck out 12 batters, allowed three hits and one run to earn the win.

Another full slate of six games is on tap this week starting with an away game at Union County (2-1) on Monday. The Lady Marshals will play their home opener on Tuesday against McCracken County (6-0).
