Marshals extend win streak to eight after wins over Union County and Paducah Tilghman

Alex Staples led the Marshals in scoring in wins over Union County and Paducah Tilghman with a combined 34 points.

Heading into the final six games of the regular season, the Marshals improved to 17-4 this past week with wins over Union County (72-47) and Paducah Tilghman (62-54) and have extended their current win streak to eight.

Tuesday at Union County, 11 different players contributed to the scoring led by Alex Staples with 14 points, Kyzer Phillips with 11 and Matthew Langhi had 10. As a team, they were 9-of-11 at the free throw line and hit a combined seven three-pointers led by Phillips with three.

An eight-point lead at the end of the first quarter stretched to 18 at halftime, the Marshals leading 35-17. They pushed the lead to 55-28 at the end of the third quarter on their way to a 72-47 win.

Marshall County held off Paducah Tilghman to win 59-58 on January 26. One week later on Saturday at Reed Conder Gymnasium, they led by as many as 22 points in the third quarter and held off a second half surge by the Blue Tornado to win 62-54.

Alex Staples led the Marshals with 20 points in the win followed by Tommy Robertson with 16. Robertson made three of their team total of six three pointers. Paducah Tilghman was led in scoring by Miles Woodfork with 19. The Blue Tornado have lost seven straight games and drop to 8-11.

A 13-point lead at the end of the first quarter grew to 17 points at 40-23 at halftime. Paducah Tilghman outscored the Marshals by six in the third quarter after trailing by 22. They outscored them by three in the final frame, but the Marshals held off the Blue Tornado to get the eight-point win.

Two important district games are on tap this week starting with Murray at home on Tuesday and at Calloway County on Friday. They have a 3-1 record in 4th District games with the lone loss coming from Murray. After Murray’s loss to Calloway County on Friday, the Marshals need a sweep this week to earn the top seed in the 4th District tournament.
