Sergeant First Class (Retired) Gary L. Poirier, age 70, of Cadiz, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at his home in Cadiz.
Born March 6, 1953, in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, he was the son of the late Aurel Leo Poirier and the late Ida Warren Robichaud.
Gary was inducted into the United States Army in 1973 and served as an aircraft mechanic and repairman. He received numerous medals and awards during his career, retiring with 22 years of meritorious service. After his military service, Gary worked an additional 19 years as a helicopter mechanic at DynCorp International before retiring again to enjoy the finer things in life. Fishing, camping, woodworking, and feeding the birds that would gather at his feeders were among his favorite past times, as well as vacationing with his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step father, Hubert Robichaud, and a sister, Dianna Day.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jeanne Davis Poirier of Cadiz; son, Gary Russell Poirier (Dannie) of Alabaster, AL; daughter, Nicol Calhoun of Cadiz; three grandchildren, Tristan Calhoun (Taylor), Gavin Poirier, and Myka Poirier; two great grandchildren, Sawyer Calhoun and Wesley Calhoun; three brothers, Aurel Leo Poirier, Jr. (Barbara) of Millville, NJ, Robert Robichaud (Janeen) of Boones Mill, VA, and Ricky Robichaud (Lisa) of Vineland, NJ; and two sisters, Ann Sithan of Millville, NJ, and Donna Millard (Bill) of Leesburg, NJ.
Arrangements are being handled by Goodwin Funeral Home, Inc., 138 Main Street in Cadiz, where the family will receive friends after 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 1, 2024. Funeral services will be at Faith Lutheran Church, 405 Sheila Drive in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, at 12:00 p.m., Friday, February 2, 2024, with visitation from 11:00 a.m. until the hour of service. Rev. Trae Fistler will officiate. Burial with full military honors will follow in Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West in Hopkinsville.
