Marshals and Eagles honor Redmen and Cubs in Glory Road Heritage Game

Logan Parker drew a foul on this lay in attempt late in the fourth quarter against Graves County. Parker was one of the Marshals leading scorers with 13 points.

Marshall County and Graves County honored past champions from each county with the Glory Road Heritage Game in recognition of the 1948 state champion Brewers Redmen and 1952 state champion Cuba Cubs. Each team wore throwback uniforms and colors from that era and PA announcer Judge Dennis Foust impressively referred to each team the entire night as the Redmen and Cubs.

The “Redmen” and “Cubs” delivered yet another exciting Marshall County and Graves County game following the girls contest that went into triple overtime. The Eagles took the back-and-forth battle at the buzzer by a final score of 52-47, handing the Marshals their first loss of the early season.

The Marshals jumped out to a 9-0 start behind baskets from Tommy Robertson, Alex Staples, Orrin Phelps and Matthew Langhi. Holding a 14-8 lead, two straight 3-pointers by Carson Carrico and Briley VeuCasovic tied the game up late in the quarter for the Eagles and they took their first lead at 17-16 on another three by VeuCasovic to end the quarter.

The colors of the Brewers Redmen and Cuba Cubs filled Reed Conder Gymnasium in Friday’s Glory Road Heritage Game.

Baskets by Langhi and Robertson put the Marshals back up 20-17 to start the second quarter and the back-and-forth battle commenced with neither team managing much more that a three point lead the rest of the way. A buzzer beating three from VeuCasovic gave the Eagles a 25-24 halftime lead.

Tied up at 30 midway through the third quarter, Lukas Pigg gave the Eagles the lead but it was quickly knotted up again on a basket by Staples. VeuCasovic scored and the lead was canceled out on free throws from Logan Parker. Parker finished out the quarter with another two points at the line and the Marshals trailed by one at 37-36 going into the fourth quarter.

Holding a three-point lead, the Eagles took advantage of a turnover and extended it to five at 49-44. A free throw by Pigg was followed by a three pointer from Parker to keep the Marshals within three points. Pigg went to the line in the final 4.2 seconds, converting both to finish out the Graves County win.

Staples and Parker led the Marshals in scoring with 13 points each. VeuCasovic led the Eagles with 19. The Marshals had one 3-pointer and were 6-of-12 in free throws. The Eagles hit five threes and went 11-of-13 at the line.

The Marshals play Clarksville Academy today in the Ken-Tenn Classic at Calloway County in the final game of the day at 8:00.
