Lady Marshals beat Graves County 60-54 in triple overtime

Eden Sandlin passes the ball off in the first half of Friday’s clash with Graves County. Sandlin scored 13 points in the Lady Marshals triple overtime win.

On a night when past basketball greatness was celebrated with the Glory Road Heritage Game in recognition of the 1948 state champion Brewers Redmen and 1952 state champion Cuba Cubs, the girls’ teams from Marshall County and Graves County made Friday at Reed Conder Gymnasium another night to remember in a game that went into triple overtime.

“It reminds me of my junior year”, Lady Marshals Head Coach Aaron Beth said. “We went triple overtime with them here. We were down eight with 58 seconds to go and came back and beat them in triple overtime. That was back when they had just consolidated pretty recently and Marshall County had not been beat by them in boys. My senior year we go over there and win in overtime…so Graves-Marshall battles are what high school basketball is all about.”

After a scoreless first two minutes, Laken Schroader put the Lady Marshals on the board first and the senior went on to score six of their nine first quarter points to lead by two.

Graves County outscored the Lady Marshals 17-6 in the second quarter behind two 3-pointers by Morgan Alexander and six points from Hannah Glisson. Four of the six Lady Marshals points came at the free throw line by sophomore Eden Sandlin. The Lady Eagles led 24-15 at halftime.

Chevelle Henson shoots a free throw in the first half against Graves County. Henson led the Lady Marshals with 18 points.

Marshall County chipped away at the 9-point halftime deficit to trail by just three at 33-30 going into the fourth quarter. Chevelle Henson led the third quarter scoring with seven points.

Sandlin hit a three to cut the lead to one at 35-34 and a basket by Waller put the Lady Marshals up 38-36. Tied up at 38, Waller gave the Lady Marshals a two point lead, then dropped in two free throws to extend the lead to four with 58.6 seconds left. Glisson went to the line for the Lady Eagles four times in the closing seconds and drained all four to tie 42-42 and send the game into overtime.

Henson and Glisson each scored three points for their teams in the first overtime and at 45-45, the game went into overtime number two.

A 49-46 lead for the Lady Marshals was tied up on a wide open 3-pointer by Alexander. Henson scored and Glisson followed with two clutch free throws to tie it at 51-51 and the game headed to triple overtime.

Waller took control of the third overtime, scoring and drawing the foul and hitting a three that put the Lady Marshals up 57-51. A couple of free throws by Kenzlee Terry was followed by a final free throw from Waller that gave the Lady Marshals a 60-54 win.

Coach Beth said the crowd and atmosphere for his players to get to experience in just the fourth game of the season is huge in the preparation for post season.

“For us to play in that kind of atmosphere with the youth that we have on the floor and still come away with a win, it just makes it exciting for the rest of the season”, Beth said.

Henson led with 18 points and Waller finished with 17 points. Glisson led Graves County with 25.

It’s a short rest for the Lady Marshals following Friday’s marathon. They play Henderson County on Saturday at 12:30 in the Holiday Hoopla Classic at McCracken County High School.
