Lady Marshals drop first district match to Calloway County

Marshall County volleyball hosted district opponent Calloway County on Tuesday. The Lady Marshals were looking to get back in the win column as well as remain perfect in district play after dropping their last match 3-1 (25-23, 19-25, 25-18, 25-13) to Ballard Memorial.

After cruising to a 25-11 first set win, the competition heated up and the Lady Marshals went on to fall 3-2 (25-11, 23-25, 25-19, 18-25, 12-15) to the Lady Lakers. They drop to 4-5 overall and 2-1 in district games. Calloway County improves to 6-3 and are 2-0 in district games.

Following a kill from Abby Belcher in set one, the Lady Marshals lead stretched to 10-4. A kill by Sarah Bremmerkamp gave them a 13-5 lead they continued to build on. A successful block by Leigha McVickers put them up by 11 and a kill from Kylie Merrick set up the set point and they took the first one 25-11.

Calloway County took their first lead of the match at 5-4 in the second set. The Lady Marshals went back on top and held a narrow lead until the Lady Lakers tied it up again at 21-21 with both teams struggled with their serves. A kill by Calloway County’s Cambrey Driscoll tied the game up at 23 and a second straight kill by Driscoll gave them a 24-23 lead and they tied the match 1-1 with a 25-23 second set win.

The third set began on a 7-1 lead for the Lady Marshals behind four straight serves for points by Ayla Holt. Back-to-back kills by Belcher and Bremmerkamp gave them a 16-8 lead before Calloway County closed the gap down and tied the game at 19-19. The Lady Marshals went on to take set three 25-19 and 2-1 lead in the match.

Set four was another back-and-forth battle with several ties but the Lady Lakers took a slight edge at 17-16 and finished it off outscoring the Lady Marshals 8-1 to take set four 25-18 and tie the match at 2-2.

Calloway County jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fifth tiebreaker set. The Lady Marshals took their first lead at 6-5. Four ties and three lead changes later and the game was tied 9-9. The Lady Lakers took the lead at 10-9 and never relinquished it in a 15-12 win to give them the match 3-2.

The next game for the Lady Marshals is at home on Tuesday, Sept. 19 against Mayfield who has only one loss this season at 16-1. They lost 3-0 to Mayfield in the season opener.
