KYTC District 1 Roadshow: Traffic Impact Report for Week of June 11-17

PADUCAH, KY (June 9, 2023) — The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet anticipates ongoing work zone construction and maintenance activities at the following locations will impact traffic the week of June 11-17. More detailed information on each of these work zones and maps of these locations can be found on our Facebook page listed below.

I-24 Exit 42 Eastbound Ramp to I-69 North Closure this Weekend
The Exit 42 ramp from I-24 eastbound to I-69 northbound will be closed through the weekend for erosion control work, guardrail upgrades, shoulder improvements, and paving. The ramp will close promptly at 6 p.m., CDT, on Friday, June 9. The ramp is expected to reopen around Noon on Tuesday, June 13.  Westbound traffic on I-24 at Exit 42 will be restricted to one lane, with all traffic moved to the left-hand or passing lane near the 41-mile marker.  DETOUR ROUTE:  Message boards will direct eastbound I-24 motorists seeking to take I-69 North to detour via the U.S. 62 Eddyville-Kuttawa Exit 40 interchange, then take U.S. 62 East to the I-69 Exit 71 Interchange to continue to their destination.  All other ramps in the I-24 Exit 42 and I-69 Exit 68 Interchange will remain open with caution signs due to trucks entering and exiting the work area.  Motorists who regularly travel U.S. 62 through Eddyville should be alert for increased traffic volume while the detour is in place.

KY 1286/N. Friendship Road Extended Closure in McCracken County
A section of KY 1286/North Friendship Road in the Lone Oak area is closed until late fall.  Local access is maintained for businesses and homes.  However, due to excavations no through-traffic will be allowed.  Motorists may use the Connector Road between U.S. 45 and U.S. 62 at I-24 Exit 7 as a self-detour.  This section of KY 1286/North Friendship Rd between U.S. 45 and U.S. 62 will remain closed until late fall.  KYTC engineers have adjusted timing at traffic signals along detour routes to accommodate the extra traffic load.

Mowing Crews Working Along I-24 starting Monday, June 12
Motorists are reminded to be alert for mowing crews starting work along I-24 at the 0.0mm on Monday and working eastward over the next few weeks.  Mowing zones will be marked by appropriate signage and should be treated with the same respect and caution as other work zones. Reduce your travel speed and be alert for slow-moving tractors and support vehicles that may be required to travel into and across travel lanes from time to time.  Mowers will be out working anytime weather allows during daylight hours for about the next three weeks. State and contract crews are working along other highways around the district.

I-24 at 34 to 55mm in Lyon County starting June 7
Be alert for an intermittent daytime work zone at points along I-24 eastbound between the 34 and 55-mile marker to allow brush clearing at bridge ends, overpasses, and signage locations. This intermittent work zone will be active 7 a.m., to 2 p.m., CDT, each day that weather permits.  All eastbound traffic will move to the left-hand or passing lane in this work zone. The work zone will change locations from time to time until the work is completed.

I-24 near KY-TN State Line in Christian County
Be alert for work zone lane restrictions near the KY-TN State Line between mile point 91.97 and mile point 93.37.  This 1.4 mile work zone for both eastbound and westbound traffic is for asphalt paving.  This work zone is expected to be active for about another week whenever weather allows.

I-24 Paducah Exit 3 and KY 305
A traffic shift was completed on Friday.  Left turns are still prohibited at ALL I-24 entry and exit ramp ends at Exit 3.  No U-TURNS are allowed in this work zone. To reach your desired destination make a right turn, go out of the work zone to find a safe place to turn around and return in the desired direction to reach your destination or make the required turn.  Traffic along KY 305/Cairo Rd is limited to one lane in each direction.   All businesses around the Exit 3 interchange have full access to KY 305. Target completion date is June 30.

KY 994/Old Mayfield Rd in Paducah
KY 994/Old Mayfield Road is closed between Division Street and U.S. 60/Irvin Cobb Drive/South 21st Street in Paducah to allow the roadway to be reconstructed with new curb and gutter and concrete pavement. The closed section of KY 994/Old Mayfield Road includes intersections with Alabama Street, Quarles Avenue, South 25th Street, and Chester Hack Drive. The contractor is attempting to keep side street connections open as often as possible.  Local residents should be aware connecting points around the work zone may change from time to time  The Target completion date is June 30, 2023.

Purchase Parkway from 0 to 21mm
Work zone lane restrictions are up at several locations from about the 15 to 17.5mm for upgrades to allow I-69 to be extended along the parkway from Mayfield to Fulton.  There is a 55 mph work zone speed limit with an enhanced police presence where construction crews are present.  December 15 is the target completion date.

KY 402/Aurora Hwy at 9.7mm in Marshall County
Watch for a lane restriction with automated signals on KY 402/Aurora Highway in Marshall County.  This work zone at mile point 9.7 is to allow a bridge deck overlay and maintenance. This is about halfway between the Hardin community and KY 963/Old Olive Road and immediately east of the Old Hardin-Olive Lane intersection.  Target completion date is July 7.

U.S 641 Pavement Treatment & Paving in Calloway County
A work zone for pavement surface treatment and an asphalt overlay along a section of U.S. 641/Benton-Murray Highway north of Murray has a 25 mph speed limit. The project runs from Robert Young Boulevard at mile point 11.25, extending north to KY 1824/Radio Road at mile point 12.348, a distance of just over 1 mile.  A chip and seal treatment will serve as the temporary driving surface for about one week before a pavement overlay is added to provide the final driving surface.  The initial treatment is a sealer to extend the life of the pavement. Once it has cured, an asphalt pavement overlay will be added to provide a smooth driving surface.  The target completion date is June 16, 2023.

Pavement Marker Caravan Working in Five Counties
Retro-reflective pavement markers will be replaced along 4-lane highways in five counties.  Motorists should be alert for a mobile work caravan that will be removing old reflective pavement lane markers and replacing them with new markers along short sections of highway in Calloway, Graves, McCracken, Marshall, and Trigg counties. See the post on our Facebook page for specific roadway segments. This caravan is expected to complete work around July 4.

Traffic Stripe Paint Caravan
A traffic paint striping caravan will be applying yellow center-line paint to highways in various counties.  The caravan will be on the road during daylight hours anytime weather allows. Motorists are reminded to avoid driving through wet paint. While the crews use a special paint that generally dries in about 5 minutes, driving through wet paint during the first few minutes after it is applied is not advised. This traffic paint caravan that will generally consist of a paint truck and two or three escort vehicles moving at about 45 miles per hour. Appropriate caution is required whenever you encounter a mobile work caravan.

KY 128/Wallonia Rd Closed in NE Trigg County
KY 128/Wallonia Road is closed at the 5.9mm in northeastern Trigg County, where a sinkhole developed in the middle of the roadway Friday This is along KY 128 between KY 1507 Barefield Road and KY 124/Cerulean Road.  The site is closed and barricaded. There will be no marked detour.  A crew plans to be at the site early Monday to dig into the hole and start efforts to make repairs.

KY 129/East State Line Road in the City of Fulton
KY 129/East State Line Road is closed at mile point 0.65 in Fulton after a contract inspection team reported a number of structural issues with a bridge over an unnamed tributary to Harris Fork Creek. This closure is along KY 129/East State Line Road immediately east of the Cleveland Avenue intersection.  KYTC District 1 engineers will examine the bridge in detail over the next week to determine if it can be repaired or should be replaced.  Updates as they become available.

KY 348/Symsonia Hwy to Closed starting Monday, June 12
KY 348/Symsonia Highway will close for 3-days between Benton and Symsonia in western Marshall County starting Monday, June 12, at mile point 5.5 to allow a deep cross drain to be replaced. This closure is along KY 348 between KY 1490/Elva Road and KY 2606/Jackson School Road. It is about 3/10ths of a mile west of KY 2606/Jackson School Road.  It is expected to remain closed until sometime Wednesday afternoon, June 14. There will be no marked detour. The suggested self-detour is via KY 1949/Wadesboro Rd, KY 408/Oak Level Road, and KY 2606/Jackson School Road.

KY 129 in Southern Graves County
Be alert for a work zone along KY 129 from the KY 94 intersection at mile point 8.735, extending northward through the KY 2422 intersection to KY 339 at mile point 15.4, a distance of 6.67 miles.  Due to narrow pavement, this work zone has an 8 ft. load width restriction.  Motorists should be alert for one-lane traffic with alternating flow controlled by flaggers at various locations.  November 15 is the target completion date.

KY 1722 in NW Hickman County
KY 1772 is restricted to one lane with a 10 ft. max. load width at mile point 1.19 to allow bridge deck overlay and maintenance work on the Bowles Creek Bridge. This is along KY 1772 between KY 58 and Jones Road.  The target completion date is June 15, 2023.

KY 1748 in Graves County
KY 1748 is restricted to one lane with a 10 ft. max. load width near the 5-mile marker to allow bridge deck overlay and maintenance work on the Opossum Creek Bridge. This is along KY 1748 immediately west of the Purchase Parkway Underpass near Pryorsburg. The target completion date is June 15, 2023.

KY 1949 Utility Work in Marshall County
WKRECC plans a daytime work zone each Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday along  KY 1949/Wadesboro Road in the Oak Level area of Marshall County between the 10 and 11 mile marker.  Most of the work will be along the right-of-way and out of the line of traffic.  A lane restriction with alternating flow may be required from time to time. Target completion date is June 30.

All Area Highways
A contractor will use a large orange truck to conduct pavement traction testing along various highways in KYTC District 1. The truck leaves behind a trail of wet pavement.  The truck will cover about half of the district’s 2,835 miles of highway.  Be prepared to use caution when you encounter this research vehicle working during daylight hours.  This crew has extended their work in District 1 until about June 15, 2023.

U.S. 60 Cumberland River “Smithland” Bridge in Livingston County
The New U.S. 60 Cumberland River Bridge at Smithland is open. U.S. 60 continues to have an active work zone near the 12mm at the north edge of Smithland.  Be alert for crews constructing frontage roads and making final approach connections.  Paving crews will be adding the final driving surface in coming weeks. Watch for info on demolition of the old bridge expected in early August.

U.S. 641 in Southern Calloway County
Construction of the New U.S. 641 from the Clarks River Bridge at the south edge of Murray to the KY-TN State Line at Hazel continues.  Construction on this 6 mile new terrain section of 4-lane will have minimal impact on existing U.S. 641. The main impact is on side roads that run through the construction corridor. Motorists are reminded to avoid driving around or moving construction barricades.  Target completion date is late summer of 2023.

Please be alert and use extra caution anytime you encounter a work zone.  Slow down and put down your cell phone.  Watch for flaggers and pay attention to the directions they provide to guide you safely on your way.  All work is scheduled on a weather-permitting basis.
