Marshals drop district game to Murray 10-7

Marshall County’s Marshals played Murray High at Preston Cope Field in the first of two district games this week. Murray took the first contest 10-7 on Tuesday but the Marshals will have a chance to earn the split when they travel to Murray on Thursday.

After five innings, the Marshals trailed the Tigers 6-0. It was 8-0 after Murray’s 2-run top of the sixth with the Marshals finally notching a run in the bottom of the inning. Murray went up 10-1 in their final at bat before the Marshals final time at the plate produced six runs but the late-game effort fell short.

The Tigers, in their 8-run fourth through sixth innings, had eight players recording hits led by Cody Garner with a single and 2-run home run in the fourth inning, Carson Tucker with a couple of singles and a double by Jack Elmore.

Murray’s Avery Starks makes the tag on Alex Staples who was caught between bases in Tuesday’s district game.

Chase Hayden drew a walk and Gavin Clark hit a single to get the 1-run sixth inning going for the Marshals. The run scored on a single by Clayton Wyatt.

Chase Shelton and Alex Staples led off the 6-run bottom of the seventh for the Marshals with walks. Hayden walked to load the bases and a run scored on another bases loaded walk by Clark. A single by Maddox Cope brought the Marshals second run of the inning across the plate, Jace Driver hit a 2-run double, Maddox Cope scored on a passed ball and Driver on a ground out hit by Wyatt to round out the scoring.

The winning pitcher for Murray was Carson Garner who gave up three runs on seven hits and four strikeouts over six innings. The loss went to Clark who pitched the first three innings for the Marshals, striking out four, allowing three runs and eight hits.

Gavin Clark pitched the first three innings against Murray. The junior gave up three runs on eight hits, striking out four.
