Veteran players lead tennis team into 2023 season

JC Wells, who advanced to the second round of last year’s KHSAA State Tennis Championships, won her match 8-3 Tuesday over Graves County.

The 2023 Marshall County High School tennis season is well underway with five matches already played. Many veteran players return along with several new faces and team numbers the largest they have been in some time.

The season opened against Calloway County on March 13. The girls team lost 2-7 and the boys fell 0-9 to the Lakers. The wins for the girls came from JC Wells in singles winning her match 8-1 over Gracie Turner. Wells teamed up with Delaney Miller to win their doubles match 8-6.

Against a tough Mayfield team, the girls lost 0-9 and the boys team 1-2 with only three matches played. The lone win came from Elston Evans 8-4 over Anderson Smith.

Both teams picked up their first win of the season over Ballard Memorial. The girls 6-0 win came in singles matches from Wells 8-0, Miller 8-0, Taylor Thomas 8-0 and Madyn McLeod 8-2. In doubles matches, Emma Kate Whirley and Brooklyn Roberts won 8-2, Faith Eutsler and Thomas won 8-0.

The boys team also blanked Ballard Memorial 9-0. Wins in singles play came from Jameson Wells 8-1, Evans 8-0, Alex Dinas 8-1, Eli Rudd 8-0, Maverick Simmons 8-0 and Hunter Odom 8-2. Doubles wins were earned by Wells/Dinas 8-0, Evans/Rudd 8-4 and Simmons/Odom 8-3.

Elston Evans has won four of his singles matches so far this season including an 8-3 win Tuesday over Graves County.

The teams hosted McCracken County on Monday. The girls played five matches and Marshall County lost 2-3. Both wins came in singles by Wells who beat Cassidy Parker 8-1 and Miller who defeated Kennedy O’Neal 8-2.

The boys team lost 1-4 to McCracken County. Elston Evans defeated Manav Shah 8-2. Evans and Rudd played a competitive double match against Hayden Taylor and Luke Braboy before falling 5-8.

In Tuesday’s home match against Graves County, the girls fell 3-6. Wells won her singles match 8-3 over Ellie Swift and Miller beat Lilly Gossum 8-1. Taylor Thomas tied Baily Johnson 8-8 before falling 5-7 in a tiebreaker. The doubles team of Wells and Miller beat Swift and Gossum 8-2.

The boys team picked up their second win of the season 8-1 over Graves County. Singles matches were won by Elston 8-3, Dinas 8-6, Rudd 8-4, Simmons 8-2 and Odom 8-6. Wells played a tough singles match against Mason Whitaker before falling 7-9. Doubles wins were Wells/Dinas 8-3, Evans/Rudd 8-5 and Simmons/Odom 8-0.

Hunter Odom won his singles match against Graves County 8-6 and doubles match with partner Maverick Simmons 8-0.
