Freeland measure signed into law, measure expected to help with shortages in truck, bus, and other commercial drivers

KENTUCKY HOUSE MAJORITY CAUCUS

Frankfort, Kentucky (March 23, 2023) – Legislation filed by Representative Chris Freeland that will fill job vacancies that require CDLs was signed into law by Governor Andy Beshear yesterday.

HB 320 will now allow out-of-state applicants who have both an operator’s driver’s license and a commercial driver’s instruction permit to take the certified driver’s license (CDL) skills test for Kentucky.

“HB 320 places us on a level playing field with neighboring states and eliminates an unnecessary burden to attracting the men and women we need to drive trucks, buses, and other commercial vehicles,” Freeland said. “This is a common-sense piece of legislation and a win-win for our commonwealth. I want to thank the Governor for recognizing the need and look forward to working with the Kentucky State Police as they implement the change.”

The cost for Kentuckians to take the CDL skills test will remain $50 and out-of-state applicants will have a $150 cost, which is the same cost as surrounding states.
