
The Lady Marshals softball team is off to a 2-0 start after wins on Monday 16-0 over Lyon County and Tuesday 9-5 over Caldwell County.
In the season opener at Lyon County, the Lady Marshals sticks were on fire, earning the win on 15 hits over four innings. Sophomore pitcher Allicen Harris took the win, allowing just three hits, no runs while striking out eight batters.
Nine players combined for the 15 hits, led by senior Anna Vasseur with a single, double and three RBIs, Harris with a single, double and four RBIs and freshman Marin Oakley who hit a single, triple and batted in three runs.
After a scoreless first inning, the Lady Marshals scored eight runs in the top of the second that began on a single by sophomore Merriel Jackson, Oakley’s triple that scored the first run of the season and single hit by freshman Macy McLeod that gave them a 2-0 lead.
Singles by junior Madyson Morton and Vasseur scored a run followed by a double from Harris that brought in the fourth run of the inning. Junior Gracelyn Darnall hit a 2-run single to give the Lady Marshals a 6-0 lead and the final two runs were scored on a single by junior Chevelle Henson and a ground out hit by Jackson.
They went up 10-0 in the top of the third inning, scoring on Vasseur’s triple and a ground out hit by Harris.
With the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, six runs came across the plate on a hit by Oakley, a walk by Vasseur and singles from Harris and eighth grader Emma Reynolds.

In Tuesday’s first home game of the 2023 season, Caldwell County put the Lady Marshals in an early hole with a 4-run first inning. With a 2-0 lead, Lady Tigers freshman Adley Lewis slammed a home run over the left field wall to score two more.
The Lady Marshals got out of a tight spot in the top of the second inning after Caldwell County loaded the bases on one out, but they were able to put away the next two batters.
With one out in the bottom of the second, junior Chloe Coursey hit a single, then scored the Lady Marshals first run off a single by Jackson. They cut the Caldwell County lead in half when Henson scored from third base on a ball that got pass the catcher.
Henson led off with a single in the bottom of the 3-run fourth inning. Two runs came across the plate on errors and the go-ahead run was scored when Darnall reached on a bases-loaded error for a 5-4 lead.
The Lady Marshals sealed the win with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, all coming on two outs. Things got rolling on a 1-run double hit by McLeod, an RBI single by Morton, a run coming in following a bunt by Vasseur and the final run of the night scoring when Darnall hit a ground ball and reached on an error.
Darnall and Harris shared pitching duties with Harris taking the win, allowing two hits, one run and striking out six over four innings of work.
The Lady Marshals will play at Madisonville-North Hopkins on Friday at 6:00 followed by a noon game on Saturday at Ballard Memorial.
