Saw cutting to prepare for closure of KY 305 & KY 998 on Monday morning
PADUCAH, Ky. (Feb. 29, 2023) — A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans a work zone lane restriction at the KY 305/KY 998 Intersection just west of I-24 Paducah Exit 3 in McCracken County on Friday, March 3, 2023.
This work zone lane restriction is to allow saw cutting of pavement in the intersection just west of the I-24 Paducah Exit 3 Interchange to prepare for an extensive concrete pavement project.. Motorists should be alert for one-lane traffic with alternating flow controlled by flaggers through the day on Friday to accommodate this prep work.
This Friday work zone is to prepare for the closure of the KY 305/Cairo Road and KY 998/Olivet Church Road intersection for 28 days starting at 6:30 a.m., CT, Monday, March 6, 2023.
Access will be maintained to all businesses along KY 305 at the Exit 3 Interchange.
This extended project starting Monday is to remove about a half-mile of waffled asphalt pavement along KY 305 through the Exit 3 interchange and replace it with a 10-inch layer of concrete. Concrete will better withstand the daily wear and tear of commercial trucks braking, accelerating, and turning at intersections and business entrances.
Commuters who regularly travel KY 305/Cairo Road through the Exit 3 interchange should be prepared to detour while the KY 305/KY 998 intersection is closed to all traffic west of the interchange. While this will temporarily impact drivers who regularly travel to and from the west through the interchange, it will allow access to businesses immediately at Exit 3 to be maintained.
During the initial round of work, there will be no westbound access to KY 305 and no north or south access to KY 998 from I-24 at Exit 3. I-24 traffic seeking to reach points west on KY 305 or south on KY 998 should detour via Paducah Exit 4 and U.S. 60 West.
Starting Monday, KY 305 will be closed to all traffic at mile point 8.348 immediately west of the KY 998 intersection. KY 998/Olivet Church Road will be closed at mile point 4.048 immediately at the KY 305 intersection.
Once this initial round of concrete work is completed, traffic will temporarily return to normal during the American Quilters Society “Quilt Show Week.” Following the quilt show, concrete pavement work will resume by maintaining 2-way traffic flow with a work zone along KY 305 at the interchange.
Approximately 9,000 vehicles travel KY 305 through the I-24 Exit 3 Interchange in an average day. That includes a substantial number of commercial trucks.
KYTC District 1 will provide frequent updates as the concrete project continues through the summer. Motorists should be alert for message boards providing specific traffic information at the interchange.
KYTC crews will handle demolition and excavation of the old pavement on the $3 million project, with Harper Construction Co. handling the concrete portion of the work under a master agreement.
