KYTC District 1 Crews Make Progress on Ice-Fighting Efforts With More Winter Mix on the Way

Additional freezing rain and sleet expected tonight into Thursday

PADUCAH, Ky. (Jan. 31, 2023)   Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 1 Crews made good progress today on efforts to maintain travel following an overnight winter mix event that included freezing rain and sleet.

While crews were able to salt many “B” and “C” Snow Priority Routes today, another round of winter mix was starting to move across the region. Freezing rain started in Fulton County around 3 p.m., and moved eastward.

The National Weather Service has extended a Winter Weather Advisory for Western Kentucky to 10 p.m., tonight.

KYTC engineers continue to ask motorists to limit travel as much as possible to allow highway crews to treat and plow. Motorists are encouraged to monitor area news media or the National Weather Service website at www.weather.gov/PAH to maintain a high level of weather awareness as additional winter mix moves through tonight and Wednesday.  Updated weather graphics for this event are here:  https://www.weather.gov/media/pah/DssPacket.pdf.

Avoiding travel is your best choice.  If you do choose to venture out overnight or early Wednesday, please allow for extra travel time and reduce driving speed during the morning commute.

Many KYTC District 1 personnel are reaching their maximum allowed driving time for the day.   Most crews plan to halt operations by about 10 p.m., to return in force on Wednesday morning to resume ice-fighting activities.

KYTC District 1 is responsible for 2,835 miles of highway in McCracken, Ballard, Carlisle, Hickman, Fulton, Graves, Calloway, Trigg, Lyon, Crittenden, Livingston, and Marshall Counties.

KYTC District 1 will provide updates from time to time.  Additional rounds of wintry mix are in the forecast for the next few days, creating additional challenges for highway crews and travelers alike.
