A schedule this week that will test the Marshals started on Tuesday at home against district opponent Murray High and they passed the first one with flying colors. The Marshals beat the pre-season First Region #2 ranked team 59-45. They were led by two players in double figures, Hunter Wallace with 17 points and Alex Staples with 14, but the total team effort was evident in the win.
Orrin Phelps dropped in the first basket of the game followed by a 3-pointer from Murray’s Collin Wilson. Wall’s first of three 3-pointers in the game, gave the lead back to the Marshals and following a 5-5 tie, Staples scored the next seven points and the Marshals never trailed again. A 3-pointer from Phelps was good for a 15-7 lead to end the first quarter.
Two 3-pointers from Wall and Wallace and a basket from Phelps on a great follow up behind a missed basket, made up the Marshals eight second quarter points. Trailing by 10 points at 23-13, Murray got a lift before the half on a 3-pointer by Drew May to cut the lead to seven at halftime.
Murray outscored the Marshals by two in the third quarter, eight of their points coming from Lincoln English. Leading 25-19, a nice extra effort play from Staples extended the lead to nine on his basket and free throw. Murray cut the lead down to three points but the Marshals answered with a drive and lay in by Logan Parker for a 32-27 lead to end the quarter.
Murray cut the lead down to three points twice in the fourth quarter but the Marshals answered each time, finding ways to extend their lead back out. Moore, Wall, Staples and Wallace took control in the fourth quarter, combining for 25 of their 27 points.
The defensive effort held the Tigers to their lowest point total of the season to date. The Marshals were 15-of-21 at the free throw line and had eight 3-pointers.
Up next for the 6-0 Marshals, they will play the currently undefeated 5-0 McCracken County Mustangs on Friday in Paducah.
