In their sixth straight trip to the Girls State Soccer Tournament, the Lady Marshals came up just short in their bid to advance to the round of eight for the first time since 2009, in last night’s 1-0 loss to Elizabethtown (20-4-3).
The winning goal was credited to sophomore Isabella Yates coming just four minutes into the game and it was goalkeeper Abby Payne’s 24th complete game shutout, ranking her fifth in the state. As a team, they rank second in shutouts. Elizabethtown currently ranks fifth in the state defensively in goals allowed this season with 21.
Out of the Fifth Region, this was Elizabethtown’s first trip to state tournament since 2014 when they lost to Sacred Heart in their first-round game. That ended a string of three straight trips for the Panthers who advanced to the final four in 2012.
They will play Owensboro Catholic (18-5-1) on Thursday. Owensboro Catholic beat Whitefield Academy 5-1 to advance.
The Lady Marshals season ends with a record of 17-5-2 with their sixth straight district and region tournament championships and unblemished region (14-0) and district (10-0) records.
