Calendar Highlights for August 2022:

Hummingbird Month at the Woodlands Nature Station

Daily in August | 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

August brings hummingbirds by the hundreds to the Nature Station, and you’re invited to come witness this natural spectacle for yourself! Come by any day in August to watch these busy birds have a feeding frenzy in our backyard gardens. Also, enjoy artwork by local artists and photographers, check out informative hummingbird displays, and take part in the Hummingbird Photo Contest.

26th Annual Hummingbird Festival at the Woodlands Nature Station

August 6 & 7 | 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

If you love hummingbirds, this is the event for you! You can see as many as 200 of them in a single day at the Nature Station. Stop by the native plant sale, or the Pollinator Photo Gallery. Enjoy backyard habitat programs and demonstrations all weekend. And kids, there will be plenty of pollinator games, crafts, and activities to keep you busy all day! See the event schedule.

The Race is On- Stick Horse Racing at the Homeplace 1850s Working Farm

August 14 | Two programs: 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. & 1 – 2 p.m.

Hop on one of our valiant steeds and join in the stick horse races that will be held throughout the day. Win or lose, it is bound to be a lot of fun! You will also learn about the history of horse racing in Tennessee.

Skirmish at Pine Bluff with Ski Witzofsky at the Homeplace 1850s Working Farm

August 20 | 2 – 4 p.m.

The Civil War was not just big battles- it was also many small skirmishes. One such but little known skirmish happened on a hot August day in 1864. During this theater program, learn about the tragic Between the Rivers incident that occurred near the Great Western Furnace and discover what happened to an 83rd Illinois Company that was attacked by a greatly outnumbered guerrilla force 150 years ago. Invited historian: Susan “Ski” Witzofsky.

Summer Star Party at the Golden Pond Observatory

August 27 | 9 – 10 p.m.

Join the West Kentucky Amateur Astronomers for an unforgettable night of stargazing through telescopes at the Golden Pond Observatory, located behind the Golden Pond Planetarium. Event is free and weather dependent; check the the Alerts page for any weather cancellations.

From Earth to the Universe at the Golden Pond Planetarium

This program is a staff favorite! Very broad in scope, the show begins with a brief history of how we have progressed in our understanding of the universe. Next, we enjoy a trip through the solar system- and beyond. With stunning visuals and top-notch narration, it is easy to see why this show quickly became a favorite.

Celebrate Hummingbirds All Month Long at the Woodlands Nature Station

Don’t miss these special hummingbird programs offered at the Woodlands Nature Station throughout the month of August:

*Hummingbird Dinners at the Woodlands Nature Station include a catered dinner, dining amongst buzzing hummingbird feeders, live acoustic music by musician Brent Webster, and a presentation given by a local wildlife professional. The Nature Station is excited to welcome Shannon Trimboli, Cyndi Routledge, and Dr. David Pitts as this year’s speakers. Seats are $30 per person and space is limited. Help Name the Red Wolf Pups- Voting Closes Soon!

It’s time to name our red wolf pups! Woodlands Nature Station staff brainstormed five themes and names within those themes for YOU to vote on! Simply pick and vote for your favorite theme by reacting to the Nature Station’s Facebook post with the corresponding Facebook “reaction” button!

Voting will run until Sunday, August 7. You’re welcome to comment your favorite themes and names, but only the Facebook post “reactions” will be counted.

HistoriCorps Volunteers Needed for Restoration Work at the Homeplace

Land Between the Lakes is partnering with HistoriCorps to restore the Homeplace 1850s Working Farm’s iconic Double Pen House- and we need your help! Everyone can be a HistoriCorps Volunteer. Volunteers on this project will learn and apply traditional roofing skills to preserve the Double Pen House. Aside from being comfortable with heights, no prior experience is needed! HistoriCorps will provide all the training, safety equipment, meals, tools, and a campsite as part of our partnership. Four project sessions will be offered in September and October 2022.

Mark Your Calendars for Labor Day Weekend!

Trades Fair at the Homeplace 1850s Working Farm

September 3 & 4 | 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

We will be hosting craftspeople from nearby areas who will be showcasing their talents in historic trades that were common during the 1850s. A variety of trades will be on display as well as vendors on the farm. This is a unique opportunity to connect with the tradespeople who keep these skills alive. Come out and bring the family to the Homeplace for a fun day on the farm!

Outdoor Kids’ Fest at the Woodlands Nature Station

September 3, 4, & 5 | 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Bring the family to the Woodlands Nature Station during the Labor Day holiday weekend for a kid-friendly foray into some basic albeit important outdoor skills! From learning about venomous animals to practicing your fishing skills, we’ll learn some new ways to enjoy the outdoors. See the full program schedule on the Nature Station’s Facebook page.
