August brings hummingbirds by the hundreds to the Nature Station, and you’re invited to come witness this natural spectacle for yourself! Come by any day in August to watch these busy birds have a feeding frenzy in our backyard gardens. Also, enjoy artwork by local artists and photographers, check out informative hummingbird displays, and take part in the
Hummingbird Photo Contest.
August 6 & 7 | 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
If you love hummingbirds, this is the event for you! You can see as many as 200 of them in a single day at the Nature Station. Stop by the native plant sale, or the Pollinator Photo Gallery. Enjoy backyard habitat programs and demonstrations all weekend. And kids, there will be plenty of pollinator games, crafts, and activities to keep you busy all day!

August 14 | Two programs: 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. & 1 – 2 p.m.
Hop on one of our valiant steeds and join in the stick horse races that will be held throughout the day. Win or lose, it is bound to be a lot of fun! You will also learn about the history of horse racing in Tennessee.
August 20 | 2 – 4 p.m.
The Civil War was not just big battles- it was also many small skirmishes. One such but little known skirmish happened on a hot August day in 1864. During this theater program, learn about the tragic Between the Rivers incident that occurred near the Great Western Furnace and discover what happened to an 83rd Illinois Company that was attacked by a greatly outnumbered guerrilla force 150 years ago. Invited historian: Susan “Ski” Witzofsky.
August 27 | 9 – 10 p.m.
Join the West Kentucky Amateur Astronomers for an unforgettable night of stargazing through telescopes at the Golden Pond Observatory, located behind the Golden Pond Planetarium. Event is free and weather dependent; check the the

This program is a staff favorite! Very broad in scope, the show begins with a brief history of how we have progressed in our understanding of the universe. Next, we enjoy a trip through the solar system- and beyond. With stunning visuals and top-notch narration, it is easy to see why this show quickly became a favorite.
