Tennis teams serving up wins in first half of the season

The spring season for the Marshall County tennis team is well underway with matches starting on March 14. Currently, the girls record is 2-4 and the boys are 3-2.

Starting the season out against Calloway County, the girls won 5-4. Wins in singles play came from JC Wells (8-2), Laney Evans (8-5) and Delaney Miller (8-2). Two wins in doubles were Wells and Evans (8-1) and Miller and Emma Kate Whirley (8-6).

The boys team defeated Calloway County 7-2. Four singles wins came from Jameson Wells (8-5), Rush Robinson (8-1), Andrew Petitt (8-4) and Alex Dinas (8-5). Three doubles match wins came from Wells and Robinson (8-1), Petitt and Elston Evans (8-4) and Dinas and Hunter Odom (8-2).

In a girls only match against St. Mary the following day, four matches and four wins were notched by Marshall County players JC Wells (6-0), Courtney Phillips (8-6), Laney Evans (6-1) and Delaney Miller (8-0).

Week one of the season was finished out against the always strong team from Paducah Tilghman. The girls lost 0-9 with one match taking extra games to be decided. JC Wells fell 7-9 in her singles match to Abby Brown.

The boys team lost 3-6 to Tilghman, the 2021 Region 1 champions. They picked up two of those wins in singles play by Andrew Petitt (8-6) and Elson Evans (8-4). Petitt and Evans won their doubles match (8-4) and the doubles match of Alex Dinas and Hunter Odom was lost in a tiebreaker 8-9 (5-7).

Week two matches were lost to weather conditions with the exception of one girls only match. The Lady Marshals fell 0-8 to Mayfield.

Monday, the boys team played a match against Ballard Memorial and won 7-0. Five singles matches were won by Kian Court (8-4), Rush Robinson (8-6), Jameson Wells (8-0), Andrew Petitt (8-0) and Elston Evans (8-0). Two doubles match wins came from Court and Wells (8-6) and Robinson and Petitt (8-0).

Tuesday, the girls fell to Graves County 2-7. A singles win was picked up by Delaney Miller (8-2) and JC Wells and Courtney Phillips won their doubles match (8-5). Wells played a very competitive singles match but fell to Maddy Williams 4-8.

The boys team beat Graves County 8-1. Five players winning in singles included Kian Court (8-1), Rush Robinson (8-6), Jameson Wells (8-1), Andrew Petitt (8-1) and Elston Evans (8-3). Three doubles match wins came from Court/Robinson (8-0), Wells/Petitt (8-1) and Evans/Dinas (8-2).

The teams traveled to Lone Oak to play the powerhouse teams from McCracken County. The girls lost 0-9 to the reigning Region 1 champions. The highlight was the doubles team of JC Wells and Courtney Phillips who lost to Hannah Puryear and Katie Crabtree but won three games against the duo.

The boys team lost 2-7 to McCracken County. Kian Court defeated Aaron Lundberg 8-2 and Jameson Wells beat Haden Scruggs in a match that was decided in a tiebreaker 9-8 (7-4). Court and Rush Robinson lost their double match to Crabtree and McIntosh 3-8 and the team of Wells and Andrew Petitt took six games from Noel Puerrollano and Scruggs before falling 6-8.

The team will be back in competition following Spring Break with a home match on Monday, April 11 against Murray.
